The doghouse

If you're worried about your pet's health, please speak to a vet or qualified professional.

I've got a virus and feel grim. What's the puppy equivalent of a day watching CBeebies, please?

Pup is 7 months and a mad cocker spaniel. What do I do to entertain her, in a hoarse whisper, preferably while reclining limply on a sofa? Can't chuck her in the garden as next door have builders in and part of the fence is insecure.

DS is coming over in a couple of hours so can walk her then. But she can get up to a lot in a short time...

Try cleverly concealing treats all over? Might give you a bit of time as she finds them.

Order a puppy chew or two to be delivered today, from Deliveroo.

Tv wise mine has no interest, unless it’s birds tweeting / dogs barking. Not sure that’s a channel..

Hope you feel better soon OP

Puppy chews, yes! -- there's a selection of random animal bits in the cupboard, I'll get one out. Hiding things is a good shout.

I didn't actually mean getting her to watch TV, more 'boring day inside', but it might be worth a try.

She has just brought me her favourite soft pig, after chewing his face off in the corridor. I think possibly I'm meant to mend it.

Is there a ball you can Chuck from the sofa?

Hiding small treats around then letting her in to find them is a good shout, otherwise I do put dog related programs on tv!

bluetopazlove · 25/05/2024 10:50

Yes have you got tweeting birds in your garden that

might cause some amusement .

abbey44 · 25/05/2024 10:51

If you Google “dog enrichment” there are loads of ideas to keep your dog mentally stimulated - I find that tires mine out more than walking. One favourite is to get an old towel, scatter dog kibble over it, then roll it up and tie it loosely in a knot. That keeps my dog occupied, though be warned, the towel does sometimes suffer, so make sure it’s an old one!

There's a guy round my way that has his dog chase a remote control car. That seems pretty low energy on his part.

tabulahrasa · 25/05/2024 11:48

One of mine will actually watch tv, YouTube, dog tv… there’s loads of squirrels and birds and stuff 😂

but a kong usually keeps them fairly busy with little effort from you

GuppytheCat · 25/05/2024 11:49

Making a list here, thanks 👍

I'm honestly pretty good at thinking of things usually, but I have fuzz brain.

One that didn’t work too well was freezing a mix of yogurt, treats, blueberries etc in a large metal dog bowl which the dog was meant to lick and take ages over…. My dog threw the bowl in the air and as it landed on the floor the frozen disc of goodness fell out and she ate it in about three bites.

Time to prepare treat bowl: 20 minutes plus overnight freezing
Time to demolish: about half a nanosecond

🙄

Oh dear. Flowers Handful of kibble - throw one tiny piece in garden every so often. Likimat, Kong, food inside plastic milk bottle, cut up t-shirt and tie food in rags, drive car so dog sleeps, put on air conditioning and pull over (pref via cake shop), dog TV. Out in crate and radio or TV on. Replay crufts agility!

I haven't punctuated that very well, but I hope it makes sense.

KeenOtter · 25/05/2024 13:08

Try doing nothing. You may find if you are lying on the sofa the puppy may also be bored and do nothing (for a while)

Hope you feel better soon

GuppytheCat · 25/05/2024 14:05

Treat towel went down well. I'll remember that one.

She'll settle if I just sit at my desk as if it's a work day. But I want to lie down somewhere dark!

Son is here but doing something complicated to his coffee machine instead of taking the pup out. But such as it is, the cavalry is here.

My cocker likes ripping stuff up. I hide small treats in the brown paper that comes in Amazon boxes, scrunched into a box, and that keeps her quiet for a bit. Toilet roll inners with treats in are also a big hit. She also likes snuffle mats/balls, she'll occasionally settle for a while with a Benebone, and she's a big fan of this.

Get well soon!
