Tick and flea season yuck

Hello! This is my first summer having a dog she's nearly 1. She has the tablet from the vet for flea and worming but I've already found a tick so does anyone double up and use the neck liquid and a deterrent spray too? Is this ok? We have lots of fields around our house and I don't want to stop her using them when they eventually cut the grass again after no mow may. Ty Biscuit

Whatever you use it won’t stop ticks attaching, treatments just kill them once they are attached.

I certainly wouldn’t double up on treatments and bombard my dog with more chemicals than necessary.

BiteyShark · 25/05/2024 08:06

We treat our dog so they die after attaching.

Living in a high tick area I just accept the bastards are going to be around now for most of the year. One walked across my phone yesterday as my dog was sat next to me (the tick was duly dispatched) 😬

I've bitten the bullet and bought Seresto collars for my dogs and cats. We were bombarded with fleas and ticks last year, and I just can't cope with that again. 8 months flea and tick free is very appealing. I usually steer clear of the chemical route, but last years problems were the worst I've seen in all my years of dog and cat ownership.

MagnumsPIsMustache · 25/05/2024 08:43

Seresto on ours. Ticks don't latch on.

TuesdayWhistler · 25/05/2024 12:53

Do seresto collars work?

I've not seen a flea yet and don't want to.

KeenOtter · 25/05/2024 13:10

Dont double up on treatment.

Seresto is the only product that says it may stop the ticks attaching. Other treatments will kill them once they have attached.

fieldsofbutterflies · 25/05/2024 13:32

Don't double up.

I've heard good things about Seresto collars but we just check after walks and remove them as needed.

Newpeep · 25/05/2024 19:28

We live in tick country. Every time we went to the woods we’d come back with at least one tick. Seresto collar bam! No ticks since. Also stopped our flea problem despite using vet grade spot on. Both our dog and cat wear them.

stayathomer · 25/05/2024 19:42

we were told there's higher than usual instances this year of ticks and to go for a three in one treatment instead of a two in one

muddyford · 26/05/2024 07:54

A Seresto collar deals with both fleas and ticks.

Please don’t double up on treatment as there’s specific dosage by weight that an animal can have per guidelines.

I’m not sure what brand you are using at the minute for flea/worm however if you ask your veterinary practice about a brand called Nexguard which is an oral tablet which covers flea and worm, it also will kill any ticks that latch onto your dog in the month period it covers, with fleas being covered to die within 8 hours for up to 5 weeks.

Unfortunately, there’s a lot of ticks around at the minute especially in long grassy fields/farmland areas so I would also recommend getting a tick tool in the meantime (Amazon or pets at home stock them for a few £) so that if you do manage to see one then you can remove it yourself.

Hedgerow2 · 31/05/2024 14:06

Agree with others - you shouldn't double up on treatments.

We live in a high tick area and our dogs have a monthly Nexguard chew which seems effective. We remove a fair number of dead ticks from them - 3 just now from one dog's groin. Other dog often seems to have one on his face.

My main concern is us picking them up. I had one attached to my ankle last summer. DH had one attached to his thigh last week. I had one crawl across my hand one evening when I was watching tv a few weeks ago. Thinking of getting a Seresto collar for myself!
