Companies for raw food

Hi, we pick up our new puppy on Thursday, she'll stay on her puppy food for a while, but thinking ahead.

Can anyone recommend the best companies for raw food? There seem to be a lot around and I'm not sure is any are better than others? I'd love to hear your good experiences.

Ultimately, it's going to be what works best for your puppy. Dogs are very individual (like humans) when it comes to food.

Awkwardly, my three dogs all like different things. I have one on Bella and Duke (raw), one on Butternut Box (cooked) and one on James and Ella (raw). If they manage to snaffle each others food then 9/10 times they end up with funny tummy.

Raw can be expensive though - particularly if your dog is large. My Dalmatian (34KG - she's a big girl) is on Bella and Duke and she costs me £100 for 16 days! So just shy of £200 a month. But she is thriving on it and very happy, and I can afford it so I don't complain (much!)

Good luck choosing and enjoy the new puppy!

Thanks this is helpful. I didn't know about the certification thing.

Maybe I'll have to try a few options and see what suits. I'm aware of the cost, she's an Irish wolfhound so I know it will be a lot.

We use a local supplier that does their own prep onsite after switching from somewhere that bought in a few different brands.
I pay around £40 per month for our Goldie which isnt bad and hes doing very well on it.
Irish Wolfhounds are amazing!!

We use Nutriment as can get it through Ocado deliveries

kjkp1903 · 07/02/2025 08:01

Hi - our first vizsla puppy we fed butternut box which he loved. Our second we started with nutriment puppy as this is what the breeder fed all the puppies on and he loved it.

Then he didn’t …(two of his sisters and brother also refused to eat it) so he’s now on tins of Butchers choice (British meat) with purina kibble as again recommended by the breeder and loves it. I never thought I would give tins to my dog (but me just being I don’t know. But precious…). He’s a dog. He is thriving, his coat is amazing.

Also in Which? they did comparisons of dog food and Aldi came out one of best.

Our dog trainer feeds her dogs raw caracasses from the butcher but I can’t face this as am a veggie!

There are so many products out there. It’s really hard. What does the breeder say?

It also really depends on your budget and what your dog likes and you would like to feed it.

Snot sure if this helpful at all but just my limited experience.

Good Luck.

Paleo ridge does a puppy food and they are a reputable raw food brand.

we use Pro Dog Raw and am very happy with it. It’s also a very good price too.

We’ve used Butternut box in the past but it contains legumes etc which I don’t want to feed.

I add veggies into what we feed, and also additional oats and fish for energy as ours are working / competing dogs. Conor Brady has a great book called Feeding Dogs which is very informative.

LittleLongDog · 08/02/2025 22:01

Naturaw is a good price.

Livelovebehappy · 09/02/2025 15:23

Are the Butternut boxes popular with dogs? We have adopted a 5 year old who was used to chicken (of the human variety) And whilst I've continued with the chicken, I don't think it's probably got all the nutrients. Trying to wean him onto dog food, wet, with no success, so I'm watching this thread for ideas!

I use Rexraw and get their cheapest tube, Prime. Dogs love it and it isn't massively high in bone.

Others swear by DAF but I found it too high bone for my 3.

Lots of raw providers out there, unless you are planning on having a large freezer for it all, I'd see what your local providers stock and go from there.

DoggoQuestions · 09/02/2025 15:47

The delivery boxes are expensive - it's basically a 14 meal hello fresh subscription so of course it will be!

We used DAF which has a higher content of bone/offal than most so not great for all dogs. But ours is an extra large breed and only costs £1.60 ish per 500g so not too expensive.

crouchendtigerr · 09/02/2025 16:15

I use Mersey Raw. They do special offers, selection boxes and bundles which are usually 30%ish reduced, and I like buying kg boxes, for my two GSDs. I also like the dogs butcher.
Imo, you don't need to buy puppy food when feeding raw

Zoflorabore · 09/02/2025 16:19

We’ve used Raw to your door in the past for our husky boy but he went off raw food completely. Word of mouth is probably best on a local level.

not used any of the national companies to be fair but I would only buy a small amount at first just in case.

fitflopqueen · 09/02/2025 16:28

If you use FB join BARF UK, really good information all around feeding raw.
