Beautiful golden Lab, male dogs keep trying to mate her

Sorry I didn’t know how else to phrase this without being crude. She’s 21 months and we’ve had her for 7 months (adopted her from someone who couldn’t cope). She’s been neutered. The last couple of months there have been several occasions where she’s playing and male dogs have tried to mate with her - not just humping but actual penis coming out. Sometimes owners stop them, often they’re a bit half hearted/have no control. I of course always advocate for her and step in but I’m wondering how the hell we can stop this when she’s playing because I don’t want this and I highly doubt she does given her reaction - or this just how it is as a dog owner? We are very inexperienced but learning as much as we can so keen for expertise/wisdom.

I have a lovely red lab and she has a similar issue. Tbh she dealt with it herself by just sitting when dogs get over amorous. Tends to stop them in their tracks. Then hopefully other owner can remove their dog and we carry on our day,

Love red labs - we want to get another one (we’re hooked 😂) and we’d a red girl. Just feel sorry for the wee girl having these oafs forcing themselves on her?! Also is it because the males are not neutered or do they do it anyway?

Are you sure it's sexual humping or is it just over excitement and their penis is out anyway?

Mairzydotes · 15/05/2024 09:26

Dog humping can sometimes be a sign of asserting dominance , rather than mating . It's behavioural and both female and male dogs do it. .
Does she tend to be submissive around other dogs?

This.

My male dog's penis pops out when he gets excited no female dog needed on area!

We often get the same with our 22 month Springer.

I think it's because she's very friendly and relaxed - so she'll always allow other dogs to approach her, then when she identifies the dog is friendly, she's very receptive to them and shows lots of interest - furiously wagging tail, lots of mutual sniffs etc.

I've always thought that this reception by her, combined with her being female then maybe causes some (younger/inexperienced?) male dogs some confusion?

Loobyruby · 15/05/2024 10:01

Oh ok well I’m not sure? The penis comes out but doesn’t actually get there if you see what I mean? Is that normal from male dogs? She is quite submissive but loves playing

I'm afraid my 3 year old neutered boy would try to hump her. He is a sucker for a friendly lady lab. He loves to play, likes a chase around and a bit of rolling about but then eventually, as inevitably as night follows day, he tries to hump them and gets told off or I drag him off. I wish he wouldn't. It always spells end of play time but he never gets the message. He was worse before he was neutered and would hump people and his toys too but he has stopped that now.

He is an equal opportunity humper. He will also hump male dogs or the wrong end of dogs so I guess it is just an excitement thing for him. Usually it doesn't involve his penis being out but sometimes it is. There again that can happen if he's excited about dinner or a new toy sometimes. He does actually let other dogs (male and female) hump him sometimes too.

Many females will either tell him off, sit down or lie down and obviously if he's upsetting them I take him away. One lovely black lab girl has it down to a fine art she'll drop, roll on her back and kick him off with her back legs. He is in awe of her.

I try to stop him doing it by taking him away before he gets to that point as it is embarrassing but I don't always succeed and if he manages to get started I will have to physically drag him off. It's usually not such an issue because he only gets to play with other dogs where we know the owner and have consent and I do warn other dog owners that he has form for this

NeverDropYourMooncup · 15/05/2024 18:56

Did you personally take her to be spayed? I've encountered lots of people who have rehomed animals because they couldn't cope and pretty much every time one of them has said a female animal has been done, they haven't. Same goes for vaccinations and transferring over microchips (that probably never existed in the first place).

AStrawberryTart · 15/05/2024 18:57

I shouldn’t laugh as I totally get where the OP is coming from, it’s really annoying when another dog tries to hump yours but the equal opportunity humping really did make me laugh far more than it should have 😂

CaptainCarrotsBigSword · 15/05/2024 18:57

I think you are anthropomorphising here OP. Sje isn't being sexually assaulted. Dogs hump each other. And cushions. And people's legs. And sofas. Its just what they do - female as well as male. If it's pissing her off, she'll stop it; either through physical retaliation to the dog or (in the case of my cowardly golden) scuttling back to my feet and sitting her butt down very firmly!

This is actually a very good point - worth double checking!

Loobyruby · 15/05/2024 20:22

an equal opportunity humper I’m howling

I didn’t personally take her no but we do still know the former owner and I don’t have reason to doubt her. She’s not had a season since we’ve had her either. I will check though!

There is on dog that always does it to my dog. Both male. It's just getting over excited.
Just intervene once it gets too much.
TBF it doesn't look that comfortable for the over excited dog to be honest. Has to have a little sit down whilst it goes down 😂
