URGENT any vets here. Possible grape eaten

I was putting a bunch of grapes in a bowl and I thought I heard one drop, my 20kg golden doodle dashed out and may have eaten one. Should I call the vet?

For one grape?

I have no idea. But to be no honest, my childhood golden retriever was fed grapes by the bucket load (my dad used to share grapes and cheese with her every night before bed), as well as loads of chocolate, raisins in fruit cake from my nan and everything else you aren’t supposed to feed them. didn’t know in the 80s - she lived to the ripe old age of 16.

I wouldn’t feed my dog any of that now, but I wouldn’t be be try worried over one grape.

Okitsme · 14/05/2024 21:30

The thing is I’m not certain if one dropped but she did have something that she took to her bed

My understanding (which could be wrong) is that it's like a peanut allergy in humans, some dogs can eat loads of grapes/raisins and be fine whereas just one could kill another. Vets therefore usually play it safe and will make your dog sick, possibly keep overnight on drips etc and do blood tests after. It's up to you if you want to take the risk? Is your pet insured? We had a 1k vet bill recently after ours are some raisins but just didn't want to chance anything happening.

Chocolatelover13 · 14/05/2024 21:33

For one grape I wouldn’t bother. The dog is quite big so should be able to handle it

Bichonmum · 14/05/2024 21:34

My dog had one grape a couple of weeks ago and when I rang the vets, got told to take him down immediately. You have a couple of hours time frame to get them to a vet and made to be sick before it gets digested.

The vet told me that some dogs can tolerate them and others can't and there's no way of knowing if it's safe for your dog.

Runningbird43 · 14/05/2024 21:36

Yes one grape can be harmful. There’s no “safe amount”.

these are the experts: https://www.animalpoisonline.co.uk/

give them a call and they’ll tell you whether you need a vet. Cheaper than out of hours vets, and you get your money back I think if you do need the vet.

For just one grape I would keep an eye on him over night, check tongue, eyes etc but he’s a big dog so tolerance is likely much higher than one grape

Lou573 · 14/05/2024 21:38

Been there twice before - you have to take them in quickly unfortunately. It's not like chocolate where there's a tolerance based on weight, some dogs can eat a bunch of grapes and for some one will be fatal, there's no way of knowing. It's a pain but not worth the risk, we've been to the emergency vets on Christmas Day for this!

What good will that do? Checking his eyes and tongue overnight won’t tell you if he’ll develop renal failure in 24 hours.

which is the issue. If you are unlucky and one grape causes toxicity, by the time you realise the renal failure isn’t reversible.

size of dog is irrelevant. There have been cases where small amounts in big dogs have caused issues, and small dogs have tolerated large amounts.

Turnoffthelight · 14/05/2024 21:41

I know of a greyhound who ate 2 grapes and went into kidney failure.
Your dog might be fine but might not. I would get to the vet ASAP.

Nothing to do with size. Really dangerous advice.

OnTheBoardwalk · 14/05/2024 21:43

I never knew this. I wouldn’t think one grape would make a difference

as PP say please call the vet and lets get this message out there

Yes agreed, please ignore my earlier comment following the stories on here. Google stated the dose that is poisonous but obviously the real life stories are much better to go from.

This is why grapes and raisins are banned in our house. The stress is too much. We had a very expensive Christmas vet visit because of a mince pie. Luckily insurance paid most of it. I would personally go in and have vomiting induced.

Okitsme · 14/05/2024 22:18

I rang the emergency vet who consulted another as well and they said the risk was very low. Then I read the comments here.

I would go with the vet not Mumsnet

LovelyBitOfSquirrrel · 15/05/2024 23:15

How is your dog OP?

Okitsme · 18/05/2024 22:15

Thanks for asking. She is fine. I wasn’t able to stop worrying until Friday night really but absolutely no ill effects. BUT no grapes or raisins are allowed in the house ever. We can still go out for breakfast though!

Mine snaffled mince pies too. Luckily doesn't react to graoes/raisins as still here years later.
