Golden Retriever… odd behaviour

And, it’s not due to the heat. It’s been going on a few weeks now.

She’s 9. Gorgeous girl. She’s quite fit. She’s quite nervous (always has been) so takes calm chews (at half the recommended dose for her weight) and is on organic joint chews to aid her back legs.

She’s taken to wanting to lie in the boot of the car. In the past week, she’s spent whole afternoons in there, on the drive, snoozing. It’s not a problem. She’s safe even with the boot hatch open and the doors open to allow air flow.

But…

This afternoon she didn’t want to get out. I had to put her lead on and gently pull her out. When I got home, I was unloading the bags into the house and she jumped back in. I’ve just made a cuppa and rustled some paper (to test her). Her ears pricked up, then she went back to sleep. Unheard of. She’s a gannet.

Is she ok? Is this usual as they get older? She never usually leaves my side.

It sounds to me she likes the warmth of the boot

Jessica3075 · 11/05/2024 16:07

@Kosenrufugirl Thank you. Thing is, she’s been hankering after the boot since Christmas. Now, it’s all the time. Crying at the front door till I let her get in. Obviously, not ideal in rubbish weather but, she does have a warm coat.

Any significant change in behaviour warrants a vet check. I would worry about pain and discomfort given her age and the fact that she has issues with her back legs.

Jessica3075 · 11/05/2024 18:52

Oh God. That’s going to cost a small fortune in blood tests then.

I know you’re right though 🤦‍♀️

Your insurance should cover it

Blood tests shouldn't be too expensive but she needs to be checked out - she may well need to start on painkillers or get some other support with her joints.

Kosenrufugirl · 11/05/2024 20:10

Maybe she just need a more comfy and cushy bed for her sore joints?

I had a Jack Russell loved lying on the Parcel Shelf of my car - as she got older she did it more and more. I believe it was her happy place. She was getting the heat from the window and she was high up and could see more. And it was a quiet space where no one bothered her. I guess just like a retired person sitting on their porch watching the world go by. She got older and eventually too unfit to manage - a progression of age I guess.

Double check with your vet to be sure, but it may just be perfectly normal.
