Dog sick after paracetamol

Yupppp · 11/05/2024 11:01

Dog started liquid paracetamol for arthritic hip (she’s also on onsior and Gabapentin) yesterday and has been vomiting and having diahorrea (yep, I’ll never spell that right) during the night and this morning. Rang the vets and they said it is unlikely to be a reaction to paracetamol (they said she’d have reacted immediately, whereas it was a few hours after the second dose that she started to get sick) and that she may have picked up a bug, which is comforting as she needs something to treat her pain. But I am SO nervous about giving her paracetamol again now though, and am definitely not giving it today. Has anyone any advice or experience with this? Many thanks x

What happens if you just give her a paracetamol tablet instead?

I started giving my 11 year old lab paracetamol for her arthritis and she was sick too. I'd tried her on it previously and she was ok for a few days then was sick so I stopped. Her arthritis was worse so I tried paracetamol again and she was sick again so I stopped.

She has a monthly Librela injection which does help. Also, I have just bought a dog buggy (Innopet Hercules) which she uses for the pavement home after a walk in the field- it's great as she is really slow on the way home now and I have another dog who is only 3.

They contain caffeine

@Scottishshortbread11877 normal paracetamol tablets are perfectly safe for dogs and don't contain caffeine.

That’s good to know, thank you. Mine was given librella a couple of weeks ago but it had no efffect. I’d be really hesitant to give her paracetamol again I think.

Thank you for this! I've tried my dog on librella once, but haven't continued. I've been trying clarify if paracetamol tablets were safe, and was going to give my dog calpol. As the vet charges a fortune for prescription of previcox, and prescribes 30 tablets for my old dog with arthritis.

@Mintine no problem! It's always my go-to for my beagle if he's ever struggling (he's prone to limber tail) as recommended by our vet.

We just give him half a tablet twice a day and he weighs 18kg ish.

My sister and I can't take paracetamol for more than a couple of days without stomach cramps. GP thought I was lying! But we're all different. Perhaps try it with or after food when you retry?

The issue with tablets is the dosage - dogs have a lower tolerance than people and it’s harder to get the right dose with tablets.
