Hi all! I work as a dog sitter and have received a request to look after a 6 yo DdB, along with 3 much smaller dogs.

I’m not particularly familiar with this breed, although reading around I feel wary.

I don’t yet know the owner, so don’t know their character or the level of training they have in place.

Anyone with more knowledge/experience about who might be able to share some insight? My instinct is saying give it a miss, but don’t know if I am being over precautious. TIA!

They’re huge, I used to walk the neighbours when they were in hospital and while it was friendly, it dragged me onto my knees more times than I care to remember on the walks, there was no way I could stop it. It’s not a breed I would want to dog sit for, walking it was more than enough for me and not something I would repeat.

Does the DDB know the other three dogs? Or would this be on top of three dogs you already have? That would impact my answer...although I'd still be inclined to give it a swerve.

They're not a nice dog and combined with other dogs it would likely end badly.

Nope. They're huge and, to me, in the XL Bully camp. They could kill if they wanted. Swerve.

Thanks! It lives with the other three small dogs, so I expect should be well socialised with them. However, surprising as I’ve read more than once in the last half an hour that they can have a high prey drive and so shouldn’t be kept with cats or other smaller pets.

Also reading that in addition to being ‘highly protective’ of their families, they can tend to be ‘aloof’ and ‘discouraging’ around strangers (and I think dog-related sites can be quite diplomatic with the language they use). So think it’s likely to be a no. 😬

Surely you’d be meeting them beforehand anyway?

Yeah I would be, but that’s just a snapshot of what they’re like

Glad someone posted the earlier thread above – appears this breed has form for seemingly ‘out of character’ attacks from otherwise docile family pets
