Any dogs with acid reflux or stomach ulcer ?

My 8 year old Maltese is in the vets today being investigated for the symptoms he’s been having recently. Getting up in the night , not wanting to play much , sick in the mornings and wretching and gagging.
The vet just phoned to say that he has found an ulcer on his soft palate and thinks perhaps he could have more in his stomach hence the symptoms and to check if we are ok about doing a biopsy of it. He mentioned acid reflux medication.

will probably know more when we pick him up shortly.
Has anyone else’s dog had this ? Did they need an endoscopy? What happened ?

my poor baby can’t wait to get him back he must have felt like shit. I have Gerd myself.

Mine used to be sick a lot, often on an empty stomach, vet prescribed a week of 10mg omeprazole and charged an absolute fortune for it. I bought it from an online pharmacy answering the questions for me for the same price for 3 months worth. One a day worked a treat. He didn't have ulcers that I know of.

Our 10 year old lab started being sick in the mornings with yellow bile, very lethargic. He slowly went off his food and we spent weeks messing about with the local vets giving him pain meds, anti sickness drugs, Omeprazole for acid, trying feeding little and often etc, they did a scan which they saw nothing in and kept saying might just be a bug that will pass as blood tests showed nothing, before getting a referral to the vet hospital and a 4 week wait, where he kept losing weight.

Vet hospital vets immediately picked up a large area of thickening in the stomach lining on their scan that the local vets missed and also something in the bloods (can't remember what). They thought it could be either gastritis or something more sinister, he had an endoscopy the next day which sadly found it was something more sinister.

I feel the local vets messed about for far too long, it wouldn't have changed the outcome but he would have suffered for less time. The only positive thing they did was admit it was better getting the endoscopy done at the hospital as they were not as experienced enough in diagnosing from it as they did it so infrequently. If there is likely to be a waiting list (and you have insurance) I would ask for the hospital referral while they are working through the options, you can always cancel if not needed. I would also ask you vet how experienced they are in endoscopy as it wont be cheap and your money might be better spent at the vet hospital.

sorry It wasn’t a good outcome @Blanketpolicy
weve come home with some omeprazole, pardale v and Lactulose. Biopsies of his lymph nodes (were raised) have also been taken. Apparently he might need to take the painkiller for a month. Is codeine for a month ok ? I can see all this making his stomach problematic.
Been up with him all night. Seems to be in a worse state now than before we took him to the vets . Just can’t settle at all.

He had 12 teeth out last year and it never bothered him !
