Dog walks, how far? This is just insane.

I was looking at old photos earlier and it got me wondering how many miles me and dog covered together over her lifetime.

I'm not sure how accurate this is but....

A couple of hours a day, i probably do bit under 3 miles per hour, so 5.5 miles a day, add a bit extra for hiking holidays, that's about 2100 miles per year. I reckon on average dog covered about 3 times the distance i did, so 6300 miles per year. For 14 years (with a bit knocked for shorter walks in the first year)

So that's around 85,000 miles in her lifetime. Surely not. That's just ridiculous. Did i get the maths wrong?

85,000 miles !!

Me and my girl. What a time we had together.

I have been tracking some of our walks on my phone to get an idea. I am only tracking myself - the dog covers more ground than I do.

Even though he's just a little chihuahua, he's inexaustable. Three walks or more a day, averaging about an hour each. He has been very good for me.

I got a little device called a PitPat that goes on your dogs collar and I was amazed at the distance he covered on our walks! He's a busy cocker spaniel but he did about 16 times more than me. It's amazing when you start to calculate it.

I’m not going to try the maths but awwww, that’s lovely❤️

ValueAddedTaxonomy · 04/05/2024 21:26

Everything looks crazy when you add it up. Just be careful to only add up the nice things - not the numbers of filled poo bags or the amount spent on dog food etc.Grin

It is! ❤️❤️ from me too. Lovely memories and a very happy doggy.

You've frightened me now @LizzieBennett73 My girl was a springer, not racing around at full speed, more the trotting backwards and forwards kind of dog. but I think i probably underestimated. At 16 times the distance that would be a bit over 453 thousand miles. That's almost to the moon and back.

Jus for fun, one time we attached a similar device to a PitPat (lent to us by a friend) on our big lab when we went for a hike (we live in rural Scotland so lots of big hills).
Even though it was pretty rough terrain and a lot of incline, he still did 8 times the distance we did.
And would have been happy to go again after teatime!

That’s lovely 💕

Our old man is 14 and today we took him for a new 2 mile hike and it was like having a puppy again. He was herding us like he did when he was young with a massive "grin" on this face, even though he can't see and is pretty deaf too. It was all about the smells!
This is a lovely post, @HollyCanDoAnything

Winnading · 04/05/2024 22:17

Hmmm I've tracked our distances
So if I do 5 miles, the dogs do 17.
Then add beaches where I do 6 or 7 or one memorable occasion 12 miles (long story) and the dogs do 3 times as much.
Then add another person does another 5 miles in the evening with them, and they do 17 again.
Add holidays with forests and riverside and more beaches, the odd random cycle ride where the dogs lope alongside for 15 miles (me) 20+ (dogs)

Yeah, no I cant do the math, but be sure it's a very long way.

I was doing a similar sort of maths for the number of dog poos I have picked up for my boy over the years, it stands at around 8,750 presently.

ontheflighttosingapore · 04/05/2024 22:38

There is nothing like being out in the woods or across fields with just your dog. It's the best medicine 🥰

roastedrapidly · 04/05/2024 22:44

My old boy and I have also covered thousands miles - the memories we've made ❤️

He's old now and prefers 'sniff walks' plenty of pottering along and sniffing and exploring.

CormorantStrikesBack · 04/05/2024 22:48

I have a lovely daft dog who won’t leave my side even when off lead so she walks exactly the same as me which I think is unusual. No dashing about at all. We do 3 miles a day, more on holidays. She’s done quite a few mountains in her time but sadly her hill walking days are behind her. I had to carry her down Great Gable a couple of years ago and she weighs 14kg! 🙈

CrushingOnRubies · 04/05/2024 23:59

Parents dog has an activity tracker and in the just under 4 years she's had it she's walked over 5000 miles

abracadabra1980 · 05/05/2024 06:45

I like to think that she walked to the moon and back with you ❤️

DominoRules · 05/05/2024 14:23

What a wonderful thread OP, so many miles and time spent with a loyal companion.

I tracked my springer and he does about 8-10 times the distance I do, walking with him is my favourite part of the day
