Bungee lead for small dog

Boutrosboutros · 17/04/2024 07:04

Any recommendations for a bungee lead for my small doodle? He's just turned a year old and I'm keen to start him running with me, but I bought a fairly cheap bungee lead online and the clip is massive and heavy and thumps his back as he runs! Clearly I need to get something better but looking online all the clips seen to be huge. Any recommendations for nice ones with small, lightweight clips? Everything seems to be designed for big dogs!

Expensive but excellent quality anything from Non Stop Dogwear . Great harnesses and leads for canicross and running with your dog.

Their touring bungee lead may work?

DrJoanAllenby · 17/04/2024 11:44

Where will you be running?

On a hard surface or on a beach or soft ground?

It's cruel to enforce a trotting gait on a dog breed that wasn't bred for prolonged periods of running at that gait. Huskies etc.

I see runners wearing padded trainers to absorb shock when running but no thought to the dogs joints pounding the pavement or concrete surface.

Thanks for the concern. I mainly trail run so he will be off lead and able to stop and sniff around as he likes on soft ground, but it does generally involve a bit of running on the roads between footpaths so a bungee lead would suit us well. If you can recommend any I'd be grateful.

Ruffwear do a great one

I’d leave it another few months before you do any long runs, OP. A few miles a day is fine but if you’re thinking 10K+ in one session that’s probably a bit much. One year old is still very young even for a smaller dogs and you don’t want to risk his joints/bones.

I 'run' while DDog walks while sniffing the peemail flowers. No need for padded booties. Every now and then he does zoomies to prove he's better than me. Or runs ahead to the corners and waits, looking back, head cocked, wondering what's wrong with humans.

Typically people know their own dogs.

OP i used to run with my lab, to stop the clip whacking him, I would thread it though the harness to stop the clip moving around. See if you can adapt what you already have?

Newpeep · 18/04/2024 08:30

You probably don't need bungee for a small dog. I run with my 6Kg border terrier, mostly on pavement at the moment and I just make sure she is in a good harness (Perfect fit) and we use a long lead. She loves it. She alternates between pulling me like a train and stopping to sniff. We always stop to sniff. As long as she likes. If I want to do a pacey run I go without her.

I ran miles and miles with my last dog who was also a competitive agility dog. She lived until 17 and had no arthritis or joint issues. Our vet was supportive of the activity and credited her longevity to that and the fact we kept her slim.

Go for it but build up slowly.

I hadn't thought of that but it's a great idea! Will have a play thank you.

Thank you I appreciate the reassurance. I was a bit surprised to get so many people projecting and criticising what I thought was a nice wholesome activity to do together! We will 100% build up slowly. Just doing 200-300m stretches at the moment but his ears and tail go up and he seems to love it, it would be nice to do the odd sniffy 5k together between my longer runs as we build up to it.

Can I ask what length lead you use? I've been using our walks lead but there's not quite enough play. I'm worried one that's too much longer will just trip me over as he seems to mainly run at my side!

Op, once my dog was used to running with me and not pulling, I switched to the lightest fabric lead you can imagine (it was a promotional freebie at a country fair)

Meant that when I let him off the lead (we ran on trails and bridleways) I could fit it into my running pouch with my phone.

I think it's about 1.5 m and very light. I have had a few comments from the general public about my dog being too small to run. Border terriers were bred to run with the hounds all day. They have long legs so they can keep up and should be slim and athletic. Mine is KC reg from good lines and fits the breed standard! People are strange about running with dogs. I am not sure why. It's a much more natural pace for them then our walking pace. Lots of sports dog people do it with no ill effects. 10 miles a day with an overweight hippo on the roads no. A few miles once or twice a week at the pace the dog is comfortable with, with sniff/water/poo/wee stops as needed then crack on.

That's what my dog is describing on DogsNet right now about running with me Grin

Mine too.

'Bloody hell she's got FAT! And she restricts my food so I don't put on weight. What a bloody hypocrite. Or should I say hippocrite' 😂

Shit. THAT'S why he keeps trying to steal the cheese. He's protecting me from myself Grin

My running buddy is also a border terrier
