When to spay

So my toy poodle has just turned 1 years old and is going through her second season. The vets were ready to spay her after her first season which happened when he was 6 months old. A friend who is also a dog trainer recommended not to get her spayed until she is about 2 years old. What would you advise?

My toy poodle also has a hernia which the vets said they can operate on when she comes to get spayed - it's not causing any issues so it's not urgent.

She also needs an x-ray to check her hips, something again isn't urgent but it's something I would like to get done asap.

So the vets suggested they can do everything at the same time which saves my dog going under 3 different times.

What would you do if you were in my shoes?

Advice changes over the years and from vet to vet but I would take the advice of your vet over a dog trainer, and certainly over advice from randoms on the Internet.

As far as I am aware, there is no advantage to waiting until two years old for a small breed such as yours. My current small breed was spayed after her first season, my last was spayed before her first season, as that was the advice then.

Personally, I would get everything done after her second season, you’ll probably be advised to wait three months when it has ended.

3 months after her second season so 15 months

Thank you so much for your responses. She due her annual check anyway so will discuss this again with the vet.

This is the Frontier study which is the most recent retrospective study looking at disease and age of neutering the toy poodle is in the study and in females it was found that there is no significant change in risk of disease related to age of neutering.

I spayed my dog at 2 and a half. You can do your own research, like the above poster has cited, but from my personal experiences not spaying at all was a non-option. Two family dogs, completely healthy, active, fit, dropped dead of pyometra before their time.
There are however some behavioural things to consider with spaying - while I understand it's very rare, there can be slight changes in your dogs demeanor - there's a lot of new studies on this - but personally I've not seen any changes in my own.

I think waiting a little longer is best - but I'm not a vet!
