Quiet clippers for a fluff ball

Beloved Dpuppy (part poodle) has turned out to be much fluffier than expected! I can't see how we can afford frequent trips to (amazingly expensive) dog groomers and I'm very happy to trim her myself to stop her getting excessively dirty or hot. She is not a fan of the buzzing noise of the clippers I tried... can anyone recommend clippers that are as quiet as possible and suitable for thick coats?

I bought some off Amazon after reading all the reviews of various ones. I didn’t want expensive ones, partly because they can be very expensive but mostly because I don’t keep a clipped breed & just really wanted them to trim the paws, the drop zone round the bum & any bits that got too long on the legs. I ended up getting these, they do seem quiet but I’ve no other experience of clippers so there’s that. But I thought, being Amazon , I could always return them. My little bunch seem to tolerate them pretty well after a few times of just listening with no cutting. They’ve been great for their very Hairy Mary paws.

You may be best off securing advice from a groomer on the best tools. Poodle cross coats can be dense and even if clipped you might not necessarily be getting all the dirt/matts out of them. Off the shelf clippers are unlikely to be able to go deep enough to get out any potential matts (which can, as I’m sure you know, cause serious skin issues) as they’re not usually as robust (in my experience).

I used to try and do my (show) cockers coat and eventually realised that even though I thought I was shaving the bugger down, I was barely touching the surface.

As an aside. I don’t find dog grooming to be that expensive. It’s £45 for a full clip for one of mine once a month near me (SE).

You shouldn’t clip a dirty matted coat. Clippers are not made to go through matts. You have to comb & scissor matts out then wash & dry the coat before you use clippers. Any good professional groomer will tell you that.

Masterclip - I've got a wired pair and a rechargeable pair. I've got a very nervy sprocker who I clip myself as groomers isn't an option. She tolerates the rechargeable ones very well, and they sell them in breed specific sets for your dogs coat.

100% agree. Clippers will just get stuck in a matted coat.

Thanks for the recommendations, I'll look those up. No, I wasn't going to clip a dirty or matted coat.

I would speak to your groomer and see what they suggest.

But if you've never groomed before I would really recommend keeping her coat as short as possible to avoid any problems.

As your dog is a cross between a poodle & whatever else there wouldn't be an 'expected' coat type.

With any poodle cross the amazingly expensive grooming should have been factored in & the breeder should have begun desensitising their puppies to the noise & sensation of being clipped before 8 weeks old.

It might be worth going on a course to learn how to groom your dog at home; you have to be very careful with blades getting too hot, not catching things like armpits, ears etc.

Poodle crosses are high maintenance and 'the amazingly expensive' groomers have huge amounts of training, knowledge and, skill not to mention huge running costs. It's a difficult and much underappreciated job.

Thanks all who made helpful comments. Got a masterclip set as recommended by @HesterPrincess and Dpuppy now looks kempt and comfortable
