Tips for administering eye drops?!

My poor boy had to have surgery yesterday after a thorn went right into his eye. Thankfully it was successful and fingers crossed the eye should heal with no lasting effects 🤞 on lead only walks and the cone of shame……

He has to have drop 6 times a day for a week which he is absolutely hating! Anyone have any tips on how to make it easier?? His eye must be so painful so I can imagine how horrid it is for him

My dog currently has conjunctivitis so we're on eye drop duty here too. The vet told me that it's best to sit behind them to administer the eye drops so that they don't feel that you're about to poke something in their eye. Squeezy cheese on a lickimat helps. Easier if there are 2 of you - 1 can distract the dog with the cheese while the other one does the drops.

Good luck and I hope your dog starts to feel better soon.

When our dog needs medication we put him in a specific place (it's actually on a table!) when he goes on there, he knows that something is going to happen, it'll only be for a second and then he'll get a treat, for some reason it works and he cooperates, might be worth a go!

@QueenOfToast good shout on the squeeze cheese, he loves that! Will try sitting behind him with the drops

Hope your dog recovers soon, it’s one of those times you wish you could explain to them that it’s for their own good

Sit behind them and try and hold them between your legs if possible. Have the drops ready before you do it and have a treat ready and give it to him as soon as one done each drop.

This has worked for both one placid dog and one very angry cat Grin

This is how Ive managed it, Ddog sits and I straddle him so I can grip with my knees! Then over his head and one drop straight in. I cant mess about or he gets too wriggly. Copious amounts ham to follow.

DominoRules · 12/04/2024 09:06

Think the straddling will work, tried it but was tricky as the big old cone got in the way! So next time I’ll take the cone off first as then will be easier. He’s also just had metacam so once that kicks in I’m hoping he’ll be a bit calmer - his eye is so swollen and red and weepy I don’t blame him for not wanting me anywhere near it!

Now to think of all the enrichment games I know to keep a 2 year old springer busy when he can’t go running……

Ah good luck, its awful when they are pain. I found hiding treats in a toilet roll tube provided about 10 minutes of entertainment, or wrapping treats in a knotted (in a fashion) towel?. We have a collie so understand your pain when they cant go running

Peanut butter and a Kong usually good for half an hour
