Dog peed on our bed

Wise dog owners! Our boy dog, spaniel, who rarely ever even has an accident decided to very casually jump up on our bed and pissed all over it this evening. Any ideas? He had his usual bed time trip to the garden for his pee and also peed on his evening walk.

He's a year old and has been housetrained since 4/5 months. He's had the odd wee accident when younger. This has really upset me. He knows it was wrong because I got him straight out the garden and he sat at the bottom not wanting to come in again.

He's doing loads of sniffing and loads of small pees on his walks the last month or so. Is that marking? No sign of pee infection either. Drinks plenty fluids and has been eating fine too. Poo normal. It's so out of character.

Signs of illness?

Anything that could have stressed him lately?

When I say this has really upset me I mean like I'm worried sick there is something wrong with him!

We moved to a new house 7 weeks ago but he settled well. Nothing at all out of the ordinary. His dog walker who gets him twice a week who he adores is off on holiday but he's still getting decent walks!

No signs of illness. He's his usual happy self.

That could be enough. Can't help but think choosing your bed points to a level of insecurity or anxiety about his family

Is he neutered? Is he anxious in general?

rupsky · 09/04/2024 08:43

No, he's not neutered. He's not really anxious but is a typical Velcro spaniel

I’d speak to a vet and see about getting him neutered - he’s about the right age I think.

At about a year he’s becoming an adult - that means his hormones are going to be going nuts (hence the weeing everywhere)! I’d imagine him weeing on the bed was a marking thing tbh.

Bit early to get him neutered.

I would get a vet check - frequent weeing may be marking or could be signs of an infection.

He sounds he was stressed after the event if he refused to come in again. He would not know weeing on your bed was wrong, he would have been reacting to your response to it.

I would keep your bedroom door shut not let him in there for a bit and see if it settles down if he has a clear vet check.

Personally I wouldn't neuter him but I would get him a full health check at the vet to make sure everything is okay health-wise.

This, he is insecure and scent marking in a place that is the strongest smell of the bosses. He's relying on his scent being masked by yours. It's insecure anxiety/submission. I've got a very traumatised rescue pug that is a compulsive licker. She licks and licks and it gives her happy hormones and is the only thing that soothes her. Ideally on your ankle and I swear it's like she's gone through to the bone, if we stop her or restrict when it gets too much her she will pee on my bed. It's not malicious, she's just so very confused . Even the behavioural expert we consulted said " bless her, she reallydoesn't know how to dog does she?. We have got it down to 2-3 minutes ankle licking once a night when we get into bed and that enough for her to feel safe , we just can't break it totally. We have moved last week so it she'll at the moment.
