Puppy toilet training - blip or going backwards?

MamaBanana12 · 07/04/2024 11:06

Just jumping on to tap some of your wisdom hopefully as I'm finding myself feeling a bit stressed & wondering where I'm going wrong.

I have a 12 almost 13 week old cockerpoo so still a baby, toilet training was going so well week 9-11 and now he just keeps weeing in the house mere seconds after I bring him in. I feel like I don't take my eyes off him but the second I pick up a drink or like, blink! He's weeing.
I'm whipping him outside quick & not making fuss.
Loads of celebration & party time treat if he goes outside. But I just don't know why he's going backwards.

Has this happened for anyone???
I'm taking him out every 30 mins at the moment but still having accidents last 2 days have been really bad 😭

I've read the easy puppy squeeze book & found it helpful, but pup just isn't getting it.

Am I expecting too much for a 12/13 week old (which is fine - it's been 15 years since we had a pup so I may be )

Also - he HATES the rain so it's not been ideal last few day the poor petal but I've been trying to keep him near a sheltered(ish) area

I would want him checked for a UTI - very common in young puppies and easily treatable.

We have a 16 week old cockapoo and had a few blips in toilet training but as long as moving forwards a few accidents don't matter. For example our pup was a bit stressed when MIL bought her dog over to stay and we had a few bad days of toileting but I just got back on it and was back to normal in a few days. I think a few accidents are normal just keep at it and they do get there

Thanks that's good to know. He's so smart but I'm questioning myself and it's upsetting as he was doing great and then just totally having a bad few days.
I don't know if it's maybe the wind it's been sooo windy today and yesterday and it's just putting him off going f outside

All mine have had blips - patience is the key I think. The weather is appalling at the moment which has made things worse - it is hard to persuade a dog to go outside if they don’t like cold, rain, etc - and mine don’t! I just keep at it (and pray for sun, lol).

Thank you, I think that's what I needed to hear!
Yeah it's really really windy here today and he just gets blown about ! Think that's a big part

@MamaBanana12, as if to emphasise the point, I have just gone downstairs and one of mine has had an accident in the living room despite being dragged outside in the wind less than an hour ago (he hates the wind and gets very anxious). The life of a dog parent in bad weather, lol.

Much easier if you teach them to toilet on cue.
So when they wee say 'good wee wee'.
They soon get the idea. Mine don't come in until it's happened. They soon learn.
However if you don't want to stand out there too long go back inside but carry the puppy. Then back out 5 minutes later and try again.
If you need to do something else, pop puppy in the crate.
Mine was trained by 10 weeks using this method, although we did go out every 20 minutes for the first couple of weeks if he wasn't crated because he had a tiny bladder.
It was hard work as I had covid and it was November and I didn't feel like standing in the garden in my dressing gown when it was so cold.
But he picked up the concept of weeing on cue very quickly.

Thanks! Yeah I'm teaching him the cue words - well trying 🤣
He just had a wee outside (YAY) so glad I got to give him the treat. I just stood outside for a while moving him away from distractions.

I think this is common because you get a bit lax thinking they've cracked it when they haven't.
When puppy comes back in if they haven't wee'd don't let them put their paws on the floor - carry around for 5, 10, 15 and try again. No paws on the floor until wee has happened.

rainontherooftop · 07/04/2024 13:38

It might help to have a specific area fenced off for toileting, so he knows what he's there for rather than getting distracted by things in the garden.

Our pup is now 5 and a half months. At 10 weeks, he was doing brilliantly. At 13 weeks, we'd gone backwards. At 16 weeks, felt he was never going to be house trained. At 18 weeks, no accidents for 8 days then 3 days of puddles and poop. Now, at week 24 ( I think) he's completely reliable. Hang on in there op!

Ahhh that is good to hear! I hope it stays that way! We've had a much better afternoon with him. No more accidents so far and lots outdoors!
I think he must pick up when I'm stressed 🤣

2 kids and a puppy was not my smartest move! But feeling a lot better about it now just need to keep consistent and we will get there!

My cocker is 4 this year and goes v weird in the wind. It's a v cocker trait. The bombardment of smells in the wind sends them a bit dolally so it might be the cocker in him being a bit funny.

Levisticum · 07/04/2024 18:40

I read somewhere the (unhelpful) comment that once you’d got to 30 days with no accidents, housetraining was over. For the first few months, we’d get to day 27, aaaand accident! It was so dispiriting. But it was always because I hadn’t picked up on a cue or I’d become lax. In bad weather, I still have to be strict about no coming back in until business done. No accidents for months now. Stick with it, you WILL get there (I like the idea of no paws on floors).

Good to know! I've not had a cocker before, but my best friend has one and she often expresses his weird quirks 🤣

He is definitely got an interesting personality
