Why do dogs need vaccination boosters every year?

Is it really necessary? Why do dogs need them but humans don't?

I paid £80 last week for booster and KC which seems a significant increase on what I paid in December with my other dog, Medivet practice.

They don't. Unless your hand is forced. Which mine never will be.

Like a pp said, vets are businesses. It's in their interests to get you to spend as much as possible unlike the NHS. Sadly now many have been bought out by the likes of medivet, finding a decent honest vet is getting harder and harder.

Do some research. Even the vaccination manufacturer inserts state they last for at least 3 years.

I have never and will never booster my dogs. Puppy vaccinations after the age of 12 weeks (done earlier is pointless at best, damaging at worst as the puppy likely already has maternally derived antibodies). Again the inserts state only one DHP vaccine required if given over the age of 10 weeks but you won't get many vets or receptionists tell you that.

And I wouldn't touch the lepto vaccine with a bargepole. Again do some research rather than just listening to the one who takes your money.

Also the NOAH compendium is a legitimate guide to all veterinary medicines which anyone can access. It has all the information of ingredients, contraindicatiins etc etc of all licenced veterinary products.

We stop when they reach the age of 7 as they have built up immunities by then and the vaccinations don't do much after that.

We keep ours up to date as they are labs and get into everything, including grubby water on the daily and we take them to the stables where we have rats etc so have always been advised to keep them up to date.
We also plan to travel abroad with them next year so want to keep their records fully up to date. It's definitely more expensive now, just paid £85 for one of ours booster, the other is on a vet plan that I pay £33 a month for so it's included. But I just feel it's not with the risk of leaving them unvaccinated, personally,

As lepto can't be titre tested for then yes that can be given yearly.

However my dog who turns 6 this year still has high levels of antibodies from her puppy jabs so I haven't boosted her yet. I also don't do kennel cough, the one year I did she got it anyway.

It's like the flu jab it can't cover every strain, and she's a fit healthy dog so I don't see the need to get her kennel cough done.

Same here

And here.
And most humans don't get the flu vaccination surely? 🤔

around 22 million does of flu vaccine are given in the UK every year, so not an insignificant number. Not sure if that includes private flu vaccines like my DS employer who pay for all their staff to get vaccinated every year.

My rescue was vaccinated before we got her age 2. She’s now 9 and hasn’t had any other jabs. I worm and tick treat at home. She doesn’t go in kennels.

Kennel cough can be serious and very contagious as far as I know

Kennel cough is just a cold. Each to their own but I'm not vaccinating my dog against that one.

schloss · 09/04/2024 19:35

Puppy vaccinations, then titre level testing. No vaccinations after the age of 7.

I used to give lepto annually as I lived where I had seen rats in the surrounding area but now I don't.

Never give kennel cough, not worth it. In fact hope the dogs get a dose of kennel cough and then they build up immunity.

If you do wish to vaccinate your dogs, every 3 three years is sufficient. Too many vets see annual vaccinations, flea treatment and insisting dogs should be spayed/castrated as a way of making money.
