Would a chihuahua jump out of a window?!

I’m considering getting a chihuahua. Obviously there are lots of questions to consider, but the first is whether it would be safe. I live on the second floor, and the windows in my living room are just over 2 ft above the floor. Is there any danger that a chichuahua would jump out of them? There is no window sill, so it would need to jump straight from the floor.

I have voile curtains. If those were closed when the windows were open, would they deter the dog from jumping out?

Thanks so much for any advice on this!

Yes….they may be little dogs but they jump quite high. Is there anyway you can place a screen on your window?

I have two chi’s and it’s amazing how determined the little fuckers are

I had a (small) poodle jump off a first floor balcony once, despite me thinking there was plenty to block him. He was fine, but it was not fun.

Yes.

I picked my chihuahua up in the garden a few days ago and she tried to springbox off my shoulder onto the wall behind us, about 2ft higher than her.

I have steps for her to get on the couch but she jumps up.

I also had to move my coffee table as she kept jumping from the arm of the couch into the coffee table and onto the windowsill to eat the plants on there.

They're like cats.

Can you put some sort of screen across the bottom half of the window?

sunnywinters · 06/04/2024 11:21

Thank you for the replies. Good thought about a screen. How high would it need to be, i.e. how high can they jump?

Do you think that if the voile curtains were closed, it would go behind them and jump out?

If they want to get to the window then the curtains won’t stop them

Floralnomad · 06/04/2024 11:26

If they want to get out no curtains will stop them , can you get some window stop things that stop the window opening more than a few inches ( less than a dog ) or you could try the flat cat screens .

sunnywinters · 06/04/2024 11:33

Thanks for the replies. I’ve just looked up flat cat screens and they look good.

Or would window restrictors work? You can get different types for different windows.

My spaniel jumped off a cliff twice in his life. He was fine both times (they were small cliffs, but still a fair bit higher than my head) but it definitely shortened my life a bit 😮
I now tend to operate on the assumption that if a dog has an opportunity to incur a vets bill it will take it, and act accordingly… so yes, window screens sound good.

sunnywinters · 06/04/2024 12:11

@Cheeesus Thanks for the link. I have sash windows. (So I guess there’s the option of not opening the bottom sash much, but then they wouldn’t let much air in! The top sash only opens a couple of inches, so to air the room I need to open the bottom sash a good amount.)

How about interior window security guards , they are a bit like a baby gate but for windows , just need them narrow enough .

sunnywinters · 06/04/2024 12:16

Looking at the flat cat screens, they don’t come in the right size for my windows, so I’d need to get them custom made, which would be £60 each, so £300 for the 5 windows in my flat! 😮

It would be much cheaper to attach mosquito netting to adhesive Velcro and put it up at the windows that way - effectively the same thing as a flat cat screen, but I don’t know whether it would be as strong. Do you think that would be strong enough to keep a chihuahua in the flat?!

Edited

I wouldn't trust just velcro but you could add extra protection by tacking the bottom half in with small nail tacks so the tip portion is still movable to open/close the windows?

fieldsofbutterflies · 06/04/2024 15:16

I wouldn't trust anything attached with velcro, no. You either need proper mesh screens or not to open your windows, I'm afraid.

If you're handy, you can make the screens yourself. We did it with some wood, mesh and then put some hinges on so we could easily remove the screens if needed (and open the windows).
