How do you treat your dog when they have diarrhea?

My poor dog has a bit of a jippy belly and was up 3 times needing to go outside.

We've had him for 5 years and he's never really had diarrhea before. Sometimes soft stools but it resolves quickly.

I suspect it may be because we had given him a new treat he hadn't had before (sizzlers.. the bacon treat things).

Not sure what's best to do, whether to fast him for a day, go straight onto chicken and rice, just dry food..

What has worked for you and your dog?

(Obviously if it gets worse we will take him to the vets).

Chicken and rice cooked together on the rice cooker. (Mush the chicken in with it all and the rice is stewed in the juice.) Pumpkin also good to add.

Foxblue · 03/04/2024 13:27

I usually just try and persuade mine to eat some chicken (as she loves it, and I figure it's a good way to get some protein in her)

Slight thread hijack:

How do you get your dog to drink water when they are sick? Mine will refuse food and water until she feels better, she often starts eating again before she starts drinking (she's not a huge drinker normally which I imagine contributes)

Boiled Chicken ( no skin) & rice & small amount carrot & green beans has helped settle my mini dashcund’s diarrhoea a few times, then slowly back to dog biscuits- chicken & rice & veg flavoured ! She loves a bit of steamed chicken or bit of salmon skin or veg with her dinner

To add water to diet, and improve digestion of dog biscuits, add a bit of cooled boiled water over the dog biscuits - mine loves this

@Foxblue
Warm water and a little food mixed in with it. You can make meat or fish stock too but make sure you cool it, remove the fat, then heat again and allow to cool until a suitable temperature. It will still be rich so I just give a couple of tablespoons with some more water mixed in.

@tizwozliz
Just to say this product made my dog very ill. Just to warn people to be careful if they do try it. Obviously it works for some but, god, not mine!

Prokolin works well, I always have a tube in the cupboard in case.
Boiled hicken and rice in small quantities.

Mix some water in with her food, or use the water you've cooked the chicken in. You can also get hydrating soups for dogs.

Prokaolin is great. We feed mashed cooked sweet potato and plain white fish / turkey when upset tum. Learnt from our last dogs Chicken can be a problem as can grain / rice.

PrimalLass · 03/04/2024 14:08

Rice turns my dog's stomach inside out 😟

The paste works really well.

@Confusedmermaid1 that's interesting to know my dog isn't the only one who has suffered from sizzler belly!

@DSD9472 gosh that sounds like it would have been scary! Thank you, touch wood no more episodes today.

@Foxblue unless it's summer we struggle to get my dog to drink at the best of times let alone when he's had diarrhea (he does loads of pees on walks though so must get his liquid in). However we have a little known trick we call 'licky fingers'. Basically we get his water bowl and dip our fingers and he loves to lick off the droplets. About 7 times out of 10 that then gets him in the mood for a drink of water. 💧

I would always ensure that his rear end was pointed away from me.

Glad I found this thread. DDog has been up for the second night, last night it was about 12 times between 9pm and 9am.

She's not asked for breakfast this morning so it's reassuring to read that's it's ok to skip a meal.

Also reassuring to read how long to leave them before seeking the advice of a vet. Seeing the Vet today though wouldn't be a problem though, if we needed to.

She's not lethargic, I've just taken her out for a wee and she was quite happy to chase all of the birds and then sniff around.

LooeLooe · 25/02/2025 16:35

I guess they are all different but chicken and rice goes straight through our dog. The only thing that works is skip a meal and / or reduce portion sizes for a couple of days.

FastFood · 25/02/2025 17:25

If it's just loose stools, I don't do anything.
If it's proper diarrhea, I give rice, rice cooking water, boiled carrots and boiled chicken. Always have some in the freezer. Also a bit of prokolin for probiotics.
If its D+V, in which case my dog is always visibly unwell and unhappy, I just give him water for 24h and then a few days of the above boiled chicken diet.

greengreyblue · 25/02/2025 17:27

Ours recently had diarrhoea. In the end we realised I’d forgotten to worm her. 😳 Got a tablet and she was fixed. In the meantime I gave her boiled white rice, scrambled egg.

TinyMouseTheatre · 25/02/2025 19:33

Glad to report that she seems to have recovered and is back ion normal dog food Wink
