We have a 9 year old dog who we love to bits but the monthly costs are becoming an issue. Her insurance has increased to £50 per month and her vet monthly pet plan has now increased to £25 per month with tablets posted to me three monthly for £6 per delivery . This pet plan covers her annual vaccination and monthly Milbemax and Bravecto tablets. The tablets I think are wormers and flea treatments/preventions.
I've cancelled the pet plan as I can quickly see much cheaper online tablet delivery companies but would also like a recommendation from MN if possible.
Do any of you get monthly tablet deliveries online and would recommend them?

No, the Pet Plan worked out far cheaper. Do you not also get an annual check up, claw clip etc with that plan?

It saves me a fortune as we get her check ups for free when we need her arthritic treatment prescribed again.

We get an annual vet check up with the pet plan but to be honest we're in and out in minutes. She has had perfect health so far but obvs I'm aware that can change any minute.
We get nails clipped with the pet plan but the vet has never done this, possibly as the groomer does it? Not sure. I'm just trying to cut costs where possible.

It probably won't save you money to cancel this one though.... Check what you get from - and use! - the plan and tot up the costs of buying it separately.

For us it's a saving of about £250/yr with appointments, discounts and the meds/vaccinations.

I checked VetBox and for my dog's weight the tablets are £8.50 per month delivered. So much cheaper. I would then just need to book annual vaccinations at the vet and she doesn't ever go to kennels so wouldn't need kennel cough vaccine.
She has never needed treatment for anything so far at the vet but she's 9 so may change obviously.

I’ve used VetUk & Animed regularly for prescription meds only though.

I don’t understand just what’s included in your vet monthly plan, perhaps I’m being thick.
This is just personally but I don’t regularly use wormers unless I see evidence of them. Nor do I use flea products. My bunch have never had a flea since our old cat died twenty years ago. They get bathed once a month & there’s never a sign of a flea or their dirt, easy to spot. Just personal but I don’t believe in pumping them full of chemicals unnecessarily.
I expect to get flamed for this but it’s worked for me & my dogs for years.

My vets does one of those monthly pet plans and I sat and worked the costings out and its cheaper to pay as you go. Donthey get commission on them or something as the receptionist aggressively tries to sell me it wvery time I visit. I had one previously and realised it wasn't saving me anything so not willing to sign up for one with new Ddog.

I use Animed and Vets Online for wormers and have been tons cheaper for the exact same wormer the vet supplies! I worked it out as 10th of the price which again shows the pet plans are not great.

I have Ddog insured but I also put money away in a bank account for her as last Ddog was cheap to unsure when he hit 10 it became extortionate so I won't insure once the prices get silly but will have cash put aside.

I’m the same as @Darklane - we don’t treat fleas or worms and have never had either in six years.

pharmachameleon · 02/04/2024 14:55

Yes I'm wondering if the tablets are really worth it-I completely understand those that have said they don't want to pump unnecessary meds into their dogs. I'm not sure how administering treatment doses of anthelmintics can prevent worms. I'm no expert though! My dog is at the groomer every month so surely if she had fleas I would know and could treat them quickly.
My vet pet plan includes the following-one annual check up, annual vaccinations, monthly anti worming and anti flea tablets. Today it increased from £17/month to £25/month with no extra service so I'm really wondering if it's worth it and trying and see where I can cut costs.
Her insurance is £50 and we've never claimed a penny. She's never been sick in her life however I expect the insurance to jump up in cost each year.

Our vet suggested no more vaccines once they reach seven or eight because they're not necessary unless your dog is in a high risk area for lepto from rats. A titre test is an option.
Wormers should only be given to treat worms not as a preventative. Flea treatment again is only really necessary if your dog frequents high risk areas (foxes, deer, tourist animals) or shows signs of fleas.

pharmachameleon · 02/04/2024 15:08

Really @Youdontknowmedoyou? Interesting. My dog is 9 so perhaps she wouldn't be getting any more vaccines anyway. I think I'm going to stop giving her everything.
Thanks all-really helpful.

Yes, my vet doesn’t give vaccines to my older ones. If you read the manufacturer’s recommendations even they say have the puppy vaccines, the boosters at a year old ( in case there were still mum’s antibodies preventing a full take up as a puppy,) then a booster at around seven years old to top up.
That’s what I do & lots of other show people I know. When you think about it we don’t have our children boosted every year for baby inoculations. Lepto if rats are a problem as a PP said.
I’ve also never taken up vet’s schemes like you described or had any form of pet insurance, other than the few weeks ones for puppies going to new homes, instead I pay regularly into an account out of which all vet bills come. It now has a healthy balance of over £20k instead of being in some insurance company’s profits. Just my choice that’s worked for me.

Tara336 · 02/04/2024 18:27

That's really interesting re vaccines and wormers I'd prefer not to pump my dog with unnecessary chemicals, I'm planning on a change of vet (for lots of reasons) I may ask the new vet what they think. I dont use flea treatment as never had an issue with that and stopped worming my dog monthly once she reached 6 months and have changed to every 3 months, she will be due vaccines soon as will be one next month.
