Dog harrassed my guest yesterday

My dog is usually very well behaved, he does not jump, does not harrass any of us ( he comes over for a stroke but is nice about it ) does not sit on my sofa ( he has his own lovely bed + his own beanbag ) doesn't make a lot of noise ( occasionally barks )

So, why, yesterday was he just an absolute arsehole?

My friend came round, the dog would not leave us alone, he wasnt relaxed at all, completely hyper focused on us both, anytime any of us moved he was jumping up, shoving his face into mine or his ( we were sat on separate sofas ) really shoving himself to have a stroke he hurt me a few times,

Kept getting on his back legs and actually jumping in our faces ( hes a big dog! )

When I put him outside he was jumping at my back door, body slamming it, scratching his nails up and down it, his bed is a crate so I ended up putting him in there because he would not leave us alone and he was crying screaming in his crate to come out

Soon as he came out he was jumping back in our faces, shoving us. He kept going sitting on my sofa too when he knows he isnt allowed

I could of forgiven it all IF AS SOON AS MY GUEST LEFT the dog went and sat nicely and quietly in his bed,

This was yesterday and I'm actually still so annoyed, he properly took the mick out of me yesterday and he knows he did aswell because as soon as my friend went he took himself to his bed and did that guilty sont want to look at you face they do

Why did he behave so badly and then immediately stop when my friend left?

She probably smelt interesting.

icelollycraving · 01/04/2024 10:32

Were they threatened by your guest? Are they used to male guests?

icelollycraving · 01/04/2024 10:33

Btw I have no knowledge or experience of dogs, in fact I’m quite scared of them. This came up in active. Hopefully more knowledgeable people will answer 🙈

Would you believe I'm scared of dogs too! I've had mine since he was a baby and I would still never trust him 100%, I dont leave him on his own with my children ect despite him never showing an aggression,

I didnt even think about it being because my friend was Male but maybe that was it as no, he isnt used to Male guests at all. I frequently have female visitors and although he is giddy and excited to see them he does not jump, doesnt force himself in their space and doesnt behave like he did yesterday

Basic jealousy I would imagine!

K0OLA1D · 01/04/2024 10:40

My 12 year old, exquisitely behaved border collie, is IN LOVE with one of my best friends. He doesn't give her a minute when she's here. She doesn't mind it though thankfully. Your dog must've just really liked your friend!

shearwater2 · 01/04/2024 10:49

Jealousy or fear I think. My dog is a rescue and gets a bit funny with DD2's friends in particular coming round sometimes, a bit growly. She was fostered after kennels and would have seen dogs coming in and dogs leaving. She didn't know the dogs leaving would have been going to good homes and they could have just been cast out due to a new dog arriving for all she knows.

So DD2 to the dog is probably next in line in the hierarchy as she knows DD2 is not quite a grown up, and when her friends come then perhaps the dog fears she will be displaced in the pack.

shearwater2 · 01/04/2024 10:50

She growled at DD2's boyfriend when he sat on the sofa. It was definitely a "Why is he allowed on the sofa?" thing.

WarshipRocinante · 01/04/2024 10:51

It could just be that you had a male guest and the dog isn’t used to make guests. Or your mate has cancer and the dog could smell it… but that’s very unusual and almost never what’s happening.

sonjadog · 01/04/2024 10:54

It will be because you had a male guest. He is used to being the man in your life and was jealous that you had another male there. He was just reminding you that he is your number one man.

I am a single female who has had male dogs for decades. This is a familiar scenario. The way to deal with it is training so that he knows that this behaviour is not allowed, not in any circumstances. My male dogs used to just skulk around in the background, looking moody.

fieldsofbutterflies · 01/04/2024 18:18

Your dog sounds like he was incredibly stressed out. Please don't be annoyed with him.

MadraUisce · 02/04/2024 17:43

He was telling you something. Dogs KNOW.
