Neighbours dog

One of our neighbours has a dog...it's not a tiny puppy but it's quite young they've not had it long. It's very loud and barky which is annoying, but I've recently realised the reason I hear it so much is that they leave it in the garden every time they go out. It's really distressing to hear, it just barks constantly for ages and ages. I have told them, but it seems to make no difference and again tonight they are out and the poor little thing is losing its mind.

What can I do other than keep telling them? If it carries on, will the RSPCA be interested? I was out in the street earlier wondering what to do, and another neighbour further down was out trying to work out where the noise was coming from, and then another neighbour walked past and commented that they were fed up with the noise as they have a baby, so it's not just me being 'that' neighbour!

RSPCA won’t be interested but your local dog warden should be. Record every incident for a couple of weeks then approach them.

Keep a log of all barking incidences - times it starts / finishes etc and then report to the council

The threshold of neglect that has to be reached for the RSPCA to intervene is VERY high.
Dog warden may take more notice if it’s noise is a nuisance

We have had neighbours like this. I think it's cruel for the dog to be honest, it is cold and if it rains where can the dog shelter? It should be warm and comfortable indoors. It may suffer from separation anxiety but the discomfort of being outdoors can't help. They probably want it to be able to go to the toilet outside. Completely right to complain, it's not fair to the dog or neighbours and it's selfish of the owners because they are our and it is not affecting them, hence in their eyes no problem.

Go to your council & report it. We have had the same issues.

This might be very unpopular but I wrote a very polite anonymous note to one of our neighbours when it happened in our street.

They'd leave their dog barking for ages each night.

It wasn't aggressive at all - no threats etc but it worked.

I actually put it in the postbox with a stamp because I didn't want to be on a doorbell camera. The husband is also really arsey so I frankly was scared!

I rang the council, but that's going back a few years, as they take action with constant noise. I held the 'phone up so the bloke could hear the barking. They wrote to them and the neighbour kept his bloody dog in.

I've got two dogs of my own and several of my neighbours have commented that they would never guess as the dogs rarely bark.

Thanks all. I've started keeping a record of when it happens and have taken some videos to record the noise. They are away atm and have friends housesitting but they too are leaving him on his own outside, so I've messaged them twice (owners), and will just keep doing so. They are nice people, I don't want to have a row with them but animal welfare is something I feel really strongly about and this really isn't on!

Windows are open here because it's a nice day, and it's just so annoying, plus my own dog is unsettled by it.
