Puppy day care

I want to pay a friend to occasionally look after my puppy for a day - what would be an appropriate rate please? I'm hoping it will help both of us as she would love a dog but for various reasons can't have one, adores dogs and has good experience of looking after dogs. Also at what age could I leave the puppy with this friend - after the second lot of vaccinations?

This would only be about once a month? Thx x

Personally I wouldn’t leave a 12-13 week old puppy alone with anyone for a day. Even once. They’re little twats at that age and need constant supervision otherwise they chaos chaos and eat things - are you 100% confident she’ll cope? It’s very easy to forget how awful puppies are and most day cares won’t accept dogs that young for that reason.

Using a friend as dog day care is good in theory. But does she have the relevant experiences/qualifications/training? If your dog died or would seriously injured in her care, that would ruin your friendship.

Dog Day cares near me (good ones that don’t just shove the dog in a shit kennel, or have 20+ dogs at a time) charge about £100 a day.

Dog day care is usually around £25-35 per day.

What you pay your friend will depend on what you are both happy with.

Personally, puppies are a full time job, unlike an adult dog and if I were charging for it, I would expect the top rate above if not more - because there isn't much else you can do with your day if you have someone else's puppy in your care.

Thx all - I know she would devout her day to looking after the puppy - confident in that - she has a nice enclosed garden so wouldn't expect her to take the puppy out - just play with it etc. there will be a couple of long days - 5 hours or so - that I will need to be away from home - hence the question! She could also use the money hence the question as I want to be tactful x

As long as she's sensible enough not to let the puppy on the ground outside of her private garden, it can start staying with her at any age.

As far as pricing goes, I don't think what professional daycares charge is really relevant as your friend isn't insured or licensed or qualified in first aid, nor is she looking after multiple dogs or having to adhere to a load of regulations.

I would maybe say £30 a day as puppies are a lot of work and there will inevitably be some accidents and destruction. I think you also need to have a plan in place in case your dog ruins her house!

I've been looking for day care and it ranges from £25 for small business/home boarder 9-5 up to £60 a day for 10 hour day inc collection.

Sounds like a great arrangement as long as she's on board with/understands proper puppy care and it's only a few hours - I have a friend who does similar for evenings out and pay her £20 (although I know she's do it for free!)

mycatsanutter · 29/03/2024 09:56

@Doodledangle gosh £60 ! I pay £15 a day or £20 at the weekend, our fog comes back knackered as they play with the dogs all day , apart from nap time 😀

fieldsofbutterflies · 29/03/2024 09:57

@Devilshands where do you live that daycare costs £100 a day?

Floralnomad · 29/03/2024 09:59

I’d give her £30 for a 5 hour day .
