Dehydrated puppy

Hi all, please be kind :0)
Our beautiful dachshund gave birth last Tuesday to two gorgeous pups. Her milk came in, but she wouldn't let them feed. One passed away. The other is small, and is being bottle fed. Should I look at some sort of rehydration liquid to complement the feeding, and if so what brand would be best?
He's now on 3ml every 1-1.5 hours 🐾

Ask a vet

Leonberger · 23/03/2024 13:59

If he’s hydrated enough with formula (proper formula that’s nutritionally balanced) he shouldn’t need it.

lifebeginsaftercoffee · 23/03/2024 14:04

He needs to see a vet.

idontlikealdi · 23/03/2024 14:10

Have you been to the vet?

orangutanbanana · 23/03/2024 14:32

@Floralnomad yes, he saw the out of hours vet on Tuesday night and then on Friday morning where we discussed the formula feeding with the amount and frequency. Unfortunately mum won't let him feed although she does have milk. I was interested in everyone's thoughts about supplements. He's a fighter though, so we will continue with our milk schedule ☺️

In a dehydrated human neonate I'd be giving them milk, and checking their weight and doing blood tests, and considering IV fluids. In a tiny puppy who has already lost a litter mate? Whatever the vet advises.

Newuser75 · 23/03/2024 14:41

What did the vet advise? How often are you feeding the puppy? Hand rearing is exceptionally time consuming and there is no guarantee of success unfortunately. Is there any possibility of putting the puppy with a foster mum?

orangutanbanana · 23/03/2024 14:45

@Newuser75 we are on 3-4ml every two hours, no foster mum unfortunately. We are trying our best. He is weighed every morning at the same time, he is also getting used to the syringe.

What did your vet recommend? Nobody should really be recommending things for a small, vulnerable puppy that they've not seen in person.

Newuser75 · 23/03/2024 14:51

@orangutanbanana sounds like you are doing a super job. I'd stick with the vets advise and probably wouldn't add anything in at the moment unless advised to. They should be getting everything they need from the formula. Good luck!

Have you advertised for a foster mum ?
