Anyone have a large breed dog who is still pulling on the lead age 2.5yrs.

Mine weighs 28kg and I am struggling to walk him as all he does it pull.

Off lead he is ok, good recall although has the "zoomies" sometimes.

Does anyone have any tips, we just paid out for a trainer for a few sessions, he walked ok with them but with me it's back to usual pulling. He will not tolerate head collar/figure 8 at all - snaps at the lead.

We have tried treats, stopping every single time, he knows heel off lead but will not do it on lead. I am at the point of hating walks. I end up driving to just open boot and let out, I cannot do this every time. Solutions needed please. Sorry for the ramble.

Look up 300 peck method.

Try a proper X or Y shaped harness with a double ended lead. It won't stop him pulling (that's a training issue) but it will make him easier to control and will stop him doing permanent damage to his throats

I've just watched a video by Will Atherton tonight, on this and it was a beautiful young Golden Retriever as the subject dog! I'll see if I can find a link.

There you go - in have a Newf and can walk him on my little finger - bit it takes time, consistency and I practice. I 'remind' him of it every day of his life when on walks. Praising for eye contact and calmness are the basics. Good luck.

I was about to recommend him! His advice on lead walking really is very good - particularly for visual learners like me.

Ultimately, OP, you need to persevere. It takes weeks to really drum it in. Your dog has learnt that you’ll give up if they tug and they get their own way - aka no on lead walks. So you need to show them that you don’t. If you give up when they tug, you just reinforce bad behaviour.

Just place marking to watch later

Another vote for Will Atherton. Mine were decent on-lead but I sharpened them up a lot with 5 minutes of that method. Clarity of communication is really important with dogs.

I have a gen con head collar for my goldie. Without it he would pull me over, especially when it's icy. Took a lot of treats and patience but he got used to it and, on the whole, walks well on it (unless he sees a cat!).
