Old dog uncomfortable after eating

So last year my Affenpinscher had to have his spleen removed due a benign mass.

As you can see I was not certain it was the best thing to go ahead with the operation but the vet I trust said if it was his dog he would. All went well, the mass was benign and he recovered surprisingly quickly.

Here we are a year later, he's 15 now, and he has started acting strangely after eating, about half an hour after being fed he acts very stressed, like he used to act with fireworks, so unable to settle, pacing, pawing at us. This goes on for an hour or two then passes. So I'm presuming discomfort caused by eating.

He's fed raw complete so I tried chicken & rice which upset his tummy so I did a 24 hour fast and he was fine but as soon as we fed him again the symptoms came back. He is still very keen to eat, is drinking, weeing & pooing fine, no vomiting.

Obviously I'll be ringing the vet tomorrow but I just wondered if anyone out there has experience of this or any idea what it could be?

Have you tried feeding his food split into several small meals rather than a couple of big ones as that may help . It’s great that he’s done so well after his operation , I commented on the original thread as my dog has something on his spleen and we opted not to operate .

Thanks, will definitely try that.

Hope your dog is ok.

Now I'm wondering if it is food because I fed him earlier & he didn't start being weird until much later!!

Is it just the evenings that he does it as it could be onset of doggy dementia . Ours is a total pain from about 9 pm whining and wandering from person to person as he knows that bedtime is 10 so he gets his bedtime biscuit . He’s only started doing this in the last few months ( he’s 14 in June) even though he’s had the same bedtime routine for years .

I am starting to think it may be behavioural, maybe once he had a sore tummy after eating & now he's stressed anticipating it. He used to do this with heavy rain (before he went deaf) as he associated it with thunder.

Can you get Valium for dogs?

You can get Valium for dogs as my mum had a mastiff x ridgeback that was on it a few years back .

Did you speak to the vet @MothershipG

MothershipG · 19/03/2024 16:43

@Floralnomad Thanks for checking in, I haven't yet, we've been trying to narrow down the issue, last night we tried giving him a calming supplement (Nutracalm) that had actually helped with fireworks, unfortunately it didn't have any effect.
Time to give them a call.
