Which (small) dog breed would you recommend?

It will be our first dog. We want a friendly little dog: the kind of dog which we could easily take to local pubs or cafes without it being fazed by other dogs or people. Ideally no bigger than 10-15kg. We both work from home full time, and can do around an hours walking a day with the dog, with other activities through the day. Longer walks at weekends. I'd rather a dog which is biddable and eager to please, than a more independently minded dog. I'm happy to groom the dog regularly or take it to the groomers as required. I have tolerance for barking, but as little slobber as possible.

A proper poodle, miniature or toy. Not one of the oodle crosses that seem to be everywhere these days.

I have a 12 year old cavachon which is a cross between a cavalier and a bichon, both breeds are companion dogs, so he is happiest just being in the same room as you.

he’s 9lbs, great with other dogs and children, really calm and well behaved in restaurants and happy with one half hour walk a day and a few outings around the block. Only barks at the post. I’d recommend the breed highly.

Lhasa Apso
Bichon
Yorkie

All usually good natured and, crucially for me, don't shed hairs everywhere.

9lbs? My cavachon is 13kg! 🙈. 😁. She’s a total chunk

Sheltie ( Shetland sheepdog) beautiful, wildly smart. Gorgeous little family dogs. I have had them for most of my life.

Miniature poodle.

Doesn't shed or drool, barks a bit but not excessively (mainly when visitors arrive or if he loses a toy under the sofa!) is very biddable and eager to please so responds well to training, easy to transport (ours is only 6.5kg so can be carried if necessary) super affectionate and loves a cuddle.

As a breed they are known to be a bit clingy and happiest with people so brilliant to take out and about but does mean we can't leave him for hours which has taken some adjustment - we can go out for dinner locally or to the cinema but 2.5/3 hours is his limit before he starts barking, getting distressed. Grooming is quite a big task - at least 2 or 3 times a week he needs a proper brush all over, a bath after a muddy walk plus goes to the groomer every 3 weeks - alternate full groom /mini groom (bath, brush & top & tail trim) as their coats get knotty very easily and this regular groom routine is the only way we manage to keep on top of it.

My dog would have fitted your description. Except the only way she met the spec was following hours of training and socialisation. You'd be lucky to find a ready to go pup.

And this is very true or all breeds imo

I would go for a whippet. They’re amazing, funny, loveable dogs. I would avoid pugs or frenchies as they have been bred to snuffle and in reality can’t breathe. So cruel. A nice, small pointy hound is just the ticket!

I love Whippets, but they do need the right owners.

Whippets are far more like cats than dogs in nature.
