Diet for Lab with ulcer

Hi everyone, my Labrador was just diagnosed with a gastric ulcer and also some swelling on the pancreas, so vet has recommended a really bland and low fat diet for now.

There was such an information overload at the vet I really didn't think to ask more about what food is classed as bland.

I have been doing skinned chicken and rice, yesterday I added in some vegetables (carrots and green beans).

If you have your dog on a bland/beige diet would you mind letting me know what you give them. I do not want to do raw diet, I don't have the space to store it, and so something I can cook up for a day or two is what I am looking to do.

I am thinking white pasta is also bland, and could perhaps cook with with some lean mince. They said not to introduce kibble back just yet as is might be a bit more difficult to digest right now, so his whole diet for 2 weeks at least (I need to take him back for a check in 2 weeks) I would rather cook up.

So if you do this, would you mind sharing what meals you make for your ddog please.

I wouldn't use pasta as it's wheat-based and the gluten can upset sore stomachs. White fish and rice or white fish and potato would make a change from chicken. My Lab hasn't got an ulcer but can't have chicken. When his sensitive digestion is playing up, I do white fish with rice or potato. Vet said poached salmon with rice or potato was all right too. Peas and broccoli, well-cooked and squashed in, are something different, as well as cooked carrots. If I were using mince I would boil it with a little water then pour off the water with the fat. Perhaps a sprinkle of a doggy multivitamin too.

Thank you Muddyford. I didn't think about the gluten part of the pasta, so I'm glad I haven't made that for him as yet.

I will get some white fish in for him which I'm sure will be easier for him to digest than mince. Luckily he is fine with chicken but i am thinking he needs a bit of variety of some sort.

I made up some more chicken and rice today and added in butternut squash and a few potatoes that needed using.

He'd been quite unwell so I am feeling a bit paranoid that he isn't getting enough nutrients with just plain chicken and rice, so I think he really needs the veg too.

Have you given your Lab beetroot before? I have a load in at the moment and was thinking next week or so to dry roast a few and pop a small amount in each day. I don't want to add in anything too new too soon, it was just a thought as I have them in.

When my dog had this, I used to cook up the usual stuff (boiled, skinless chicken breast and/or thighs and one or two of the following: carrot, peas, spinach, pumpkin, sweet potatoes), but instead of using white rice, I used porridge oats cooked in oat milk. He loved it! I also used to give him “sucralfate” (prescribed by a vet). I used to make enough for 4-6 days because with oats, there was none of the worry about food poisoning that you have with rice. His symptoms stopped almost immediately, and when he eventually went back onto kibble he was fine. Good luck!
