Dalmatian cut foot help pls

Hi guys,

Our dalmatian has cut his foot. We have already been to the vets and they bandaged up and gave him antibiotics and some painkillers. £300 thanks very much!

It still looks fairly sore – any recommendations please? I took him out for a small walk with it bandaged up earlier And he was running around so clearly no breaks or anything like that. But he’s hobbling and licking it constantly when it’s not bandaged. When it is bandaged it doesn’t seem to scab.

Anybadvice please?

Regards

Dan

Please don't let him run around.

A few days of very short lead walks and rest won't hurt him, but running will.

Cover the wound, especially if you're going outside. We bought what amounts to balloons (you'll see them on Amazon) when idiot dog needed stitches in the pads of 3 paws. She was not impressed, but it prevented the muck, dirt and wet getting in. Fortunately she ignored the wounds at home so wasn't worrying them.

I use horse bandages to keep anything attached to the dog. Or look for human self adhering or conforming bandages - same thing, but horse ones are cheaper! Dog doesn't really mind them, and they are harder to get off agaon
Must make sure the paw is splayed when you wrap it or it'll be too tight the moment they put weight on that one. Go further up the leg than you think as well!

I'm very surprised the vet didn't discuss the need for rest, management of walking or running etc with you at the time?

He needs to stay on the lead and have short walks only until it's healed. Keep it bandaged and change them regularly too.

Yep horse bandages & horse wound spray/ powder & the balloons for outside. I also use a baby sock over the bandage for inside.

My spaniel has done this a few times & after the first time I havent bothered with the vet. It’s relatively cheap to care for yourself. Lead walks & keeping them from licking it is the hard part.

We got hibiscrub from the vet. Good to keep anyway - not expensive and don't need a consultation.
