Shihtzu X bichon frise is so naughty

Glittersparkle24 · 10/03/2024 13:11

I have a shihtz x bichon . He's almost 2 and he's so naughty.if the kids are eating say biscuit and they sip their drink . The dog will snatch the biscuit. He will rip up empty packets etc. When tell him.to get down firmly he just ignores have to tell him 3/4 times. He litterly grabs anything and every tissues. Paper hair brush anything at all. When he's told of He looks at me with teenage attitude.

I normally put him out of the room when we are eating. But if it's just a biscuit we don't.
He does not get fed left overs or hand fed from plates or anything like that. There is always food and water in his bowl. He has toys etc.

I also have a German shepherd. She is 5. And she is the opposite. No problems at all. Not when she was younger either.

Is it anything to do with the breed are they harder to train? Probably not . But I can't work out why the 2 dogs behave so differently.

He’s not naughty. He’s a dog. Don’t leave things lying about is my advice. Start training him to sit and stay in a place (bed) when you’re eating, use mini treats at first. Be consistent.

Because they are different breeds with different personality traits and different ages, Your dog is not naughty, don’t leave empty packets around with in reach and go back to basics on positive reinforcement training not telling him off.

lifebeginsaftercoffee · 10/03/2024 16:13

I bet good money that you've trained the GS more because she's bigger and could do more damage.

Her behaviour sounds normal for a young, untrained dog. She's not being naughty, she just needs to be taught how to behave.

bunnygeek · 12/03/2024 16:21

Agree that it's not him being "naughty", just him being a dog. What do the humans do when he has something he shouldn't? I would bet the dog suddenly gets lots of attention as the human tries to get the things away from them, it becomes a super fun game for the dog, they don't view the thing they're doing as "bad" at all.

You need to make sure things the dog shouldn't get like empty wrappers and packets are put away or put in the bin immediately, remove the temptation.

If the children are eating snacks the dog might try and get, ask them to sit at the table or on a taller chair so the dog can't get to them, they can eat their snack and completely ignore the dog, then trying to get said snack from children is no longer fun at all.

As for getting down off furniture, don't tell them off for being on the furniture, reward them for being off it. Make it more fun to jump down and get a reward than being on the furniture and getting lots of attention (they won't view it as negatively as you may be voicing it).

Shih Tzus generally aren't bright whilst German Shepards generally are. Training takes longer and a lot of repetition before it clicks with them.

Youdontevengohere · 21/04/2024 13:19

Have you taken her to training classes? ‘Telling firmly’ doesn’t really help, as they don’t understand what being told firmly means. You need proper training techniques.

Tara336 · 21/04/2024 13:23

I have a Bichon Shitzu he is old now but I have never known such a difficult dog to train. I dont know if he's lazy or thick or a bit of both but he's a nightmare. His house training has been awful he thinks it's fine to crap where he wants at night so has to be crated. My old dog and young pup both worked put house training really quick and how to wake us for the loo but not the zuchon.

Mischance · 21/04/2024 13:27

He is a dog - what he is doing is not "naughty" in dog terms. This is the problem of trying to make animals behave like humans to fit on with the household.

It's like plonking you in a pack of dogs and wanting you to fit in. Can't be done. He is what he is.

Absolutely this.
I haven’t been to any training classes BUT do know how my chosen dog type is motivated, which really helps.

Probably the crossbreed here is bored, and loves the attention even a telling off gets him.

Play games with the dog, my Whippet was an incorrigible thief - I worked out that she sees it as a challenge to quietly steal- she “ Quickleggs” past me with the trophy and loves the whole “ (Name! What have you got?!- and it being taken away ( exchanged with something allowed)

She sees stealing as a game and
will still do it if I’m careless leaving something within reach.

Snatching from children isn’t a good habit, so do stop that.

A lot of “Naughiness” is outright boredom though.
Play constructive games, scentwork, hide the treat- all help.

I lived in a shared house with two Shitzus and SIL had them - and they absolutely do crap everywhere.
Seems to be a trait of the breed.

My shih tzu isn't bad with crapping but he'll still wee if not watched constantly and he's getting on for 9 now

I think he's just bloody thick if I'm honest

Tara336 · 21/04/2024 14:12

@TheFunHasGone @oakleaffy thank you so it's not just mine then, absolutely drives me nuts! My little puppy was clean in the house within a couple weeks, so was my old dog I lost last year, but the bichonxshitzu has never been great, I now flatly refuse to let him in the house until he's been to the loo, it's a battle if wills sometimes I win and others I dont

Ellmau · 21/04/2024 14:17

Both breeds he's crossed from can be obstinate, but ultimately it's a training issue.

Everyone I know with one has the same issues , although other than the toileting I don't have any other issues with him
