Just curious if you're there what's the atmosphere like?
Have you spotted any stand out dogs yet?

Not this year. I used to show in the breed classes there every year but now I have a knackered spine & can’t trot round the ring any more. Really miss it but couldn’t even manage the distances at the NEC unfortunately, so it’s just the telly for me & my mutts these days.

I can't imagine the energy that you would have put into your dogs to get them show ready.
I have enough problems with getting my dog to walk nicely!
I'm always envious of the bond between dog and handler.

Is there a link listing which dogs are entered (by breed)?

I own a vulnerable native breed, and would be (mildly) interested to see which dogs have made it to Crufts this year - I can find numbers, but not who. Maybe that's not published?

It's just nosiness - I have no interest in showing, but was wondering if any of DDog's relatives are there (moderately easy to track in a breed where numbers are small)

@Darklane - can you not find someone to do the trotting for you?

Unluckycat1 · 07/03/2024 18:07

I'm not there, but found it live on YouTube and am watching the vulnerable breeds show. Some lovely looking dogs, love the otterhound, the setters (especially the Irish red and white, gorgeous!) and bloodhound. Shocked at the welsh springer spaniel being rare, a jolly looking dog.

I'm here! Go regularly. Same as it was last year - nice atmosphere and busy! Lovely to see

I was planning on showing my golden but he's such a tall thing that he's now above breed standard. Sigh. He comes from such a good pedigree to (I know it's not the point...) it seems such a shame. That being said, he'll just enjoy being fussed by all the people - even by golden standards he's a handsome chap - and I will enjoy preening every time someone says 'he's so handsome'...as though I gave birth to him myself and I am the reason he is handsome.

Wish a border collie would win best in show

Unluckycat1 · 07/03/2024 19:22

Very shocked at the winning frenchie with a completely flat face! As in, cartoon style ran into a wall or hit with a shovel flat! Makes me happy to have a rescue mongrel if that's an example of a kennel club ideal... I thought breed standards were supposed to be changing for poor brachycephalic dogs?

UtterlyButterly2048 · 07/03/2024 20:08

No. Because the Kennel Club are a waste of space and their made up “breed standards” have absolutely no relationship with the actual health or happiness of the dog. Showing a dog at Crufts has literally NOTHING to do with what is in the best interests of the dog and absolutely everything to do with what the owner wants.

I'm watching the pastoral group final judging, and am aghast at the hindquarters of the GSD

PatChaunceysFruitCake · 09/03/2024 21:20

@Unluckycat1 welshies are the most marvellous dogs. Not only are the jolly they are loyal and so loving. I may be biased

I thought that was the least exaggerated dog that’s won BoB for years. Which is a sad state of affairs that that’s not an extreme example
