Hip dysplasia in 4 year old poodle cross

Has anyone experienced a hip dysplasia diagnosis in a slightly older dog? My lovely (super bouncy) poodle cross has had obvious hip pain for a few weeks, vet initially suspected an over-use injury but sadly an X-ray has just confirmed hip dysplasia in both hips. I’m very upset and worried about his long term quality of life now. Feeling very sad that he may have to stop his off-lead walks as he runs so much.

I am going to follow the vet’s recommendations of hydrotherapy and moderate exercise, but has anyone had a similar diagnosis for a dog of this age, and what was their long term outcome?

I know so many dogs with mild hip dysplasia who live completely normal lives. Some are on regular painkillers and joint supplements but generally they all just live their lives as normal. In my experience, the hardest part is the initial diagnosis period when you need to get any pain under control and adapt their exercise if necessary, but after that, they've all gone on to live normal lives.

Try not to worry too much - I know it's easier said than done by hip dysplasia is very common and there are so many treatments and therapies available nowadays too.

A friend's Lab was diagnosed at 3. Vet advised not too much running, no jumping and absolutely no ball flinging. Other than that, he lives a normal life.

Thanks - very reassuring! Ball games are a complete no-no then?

Ideally no dogs should be chasing balls anyway, it's so dangerous and causes so many injuries 😬

If your dog loves balls then use them in scent work instead, or make them sit/stay while the ball is thrown then release them to find it afterwards.
