Moving into a house with your dog where another dog lives next door

redboxer321 · 04/03/2024 18:27

I viewed a house which would be ok for me and dog.
But as I was leaving I spoke to the neighbour who said that he also has a dog and that she would bark at us until she got used to us.
He added that she only barks when he goes out so I think she has access to the garden and would bark when we are also in the garden.

I think I'd be best looking elsewhere but I've been looking forever and had no luck.

Has anybody had any experience of this? Is the neighbour's dog likely to stop barking after a period of time?
Mine is quiet, used to other dogs, but can be dominant. Has lived next door to one before without issue but that dog was a pup and only there occasionally and the garden was bigger.
Neighbour's dog is a collie.
Garden provides a barrier with plants and a 6ft fence but it's not big.
WWYD?

We moved into our house with dogs either side of us. A week after moving in we got a puppy! The neighbors dogs were delighted with the new arrival in the neighbourhood 😁 All three dogs regularly have a chat in their gardens. We love it though! 😊

redboxer321 · 04/03/2024 18:35

Glad it worked out for you @MissyB1
I'm concerned that the dog is a collie. I don't think they are known for being barky but they do tend to be highly strung. She also seems to be left on her own. Don't want to stress either dog out or the neighbours!

I really can’t see why this would be such an issue. Our neighbours have quite a ‘barky’ (but harmless dog), she’s always on high alert and will bark if we take the bins out, arrive home etc. We got a puppy last year and although they’re certainly not friends as the neighbours dog is quite shy it’s not an issue, they’re rarely anywhere near each other and don’t bother with each other, even when they’re both out in the garden at their respective sides of the hedge at the same time

lifebeginsaftercoffee · 04/03/2024 18:51

We have a dog and live surrounded by dogs and honestly it's no problem.

Yes, they sometimes bark at each other but generally everyone is very considerate.

redboxer321 · 04/03/2024 18:53

For me the issue is that the neighbour leaves the dog in the house and garden and goes out and that is when she barks. I don't know if he goes out for an hour or two or for much of the day.

I have a barky and very reactive dog. When my next door neighbours got a dog (after all, just not having a dog when you move in doesn't mean they will NEVER have a dog...) I was worried that mine would spend all her time barking and growling through the gate. However they adore each other and spend a lot of time both lying at their respective gates, side by side (but safely divided). It's rather cute to watch.

I have a high energy dog that I don't exercise properly and have not trained. I have made no effort to address the barking by providing mental stimulation or exercise and cannot be arsed to work on training her reactivity.

He added that she only barks when he goes out so I think she has access to the garden and would bark when we are also in the garden.
I leave her alone for large amounts of time. To make up for this I allow her to have unfettered access to the garden where she barks all day, ruins the peace and quiet of the neighbour and is a menace.

There's a translation of what he really meant, OP.

We have moved twice with our dog and neighbours on either side, both times, had dogs. The dogs bark at each other for a couple days then generally settle down.

However, a new neighbour moved in at our old place with a beagle, and that dog barked at anything or anyone in our garden, it was not dog-specific. It did get quite annoying! I thought it was rather antisocial to have a dog like that in a dense neighbourhood.

Never mind moving in another dog - I'm dogless and I would never, ever consider this scenario!

K0OLA1D · 04/03/2024 19:18

Mine is a collie and he is the only one who doesn't join in the chours which starts in the summer when one dog barks!

If the crow (I think it's a crow, but it sounds like a strangled duck!) caws though, he can't help himself!

redboxer321 · 04/03/2024 19:18

That's exactly what I was thinking, @Devilshands
I feel I should walk away but we've got to live somewhere and there's so little available that is suitable and within my price range.

K0OLA1D · 04/03/2024 19:19

Can you speak yo the current owners op?

redboxer321 · 04/03/2024 19:20

No longer with us I'm afraid @K0OLA1D

CormorantStrikesBack · 04/03/2024 19:22

we got new (dog less) neighbours and our normally very well behaved dog did bark at the new neighbours for a couple of weeks until she realised they weren’t burglars. It wasn’t prolonged barking because I’d fetch her in.

previous to the new neighbours the old ones had dogs and the dogs just ignored each other, nobody every barked at anyone. Neighbour at the bottom as a new dog and I’ve heard no barking from anyone.

ToHellBackAndBeyond · 04/03/2024 19:26

If I had a dog and was looking to move I'd prefer somewhere where the neighbours have dogs too. That way if mine barked and theirs barked no one could complain.

K0OLA1D · 04/03/2024 19:27

redboxer321 · 04/03/2024 19:20

No longer with us I'm afraid @K0OLA1D

Ah. That's a git. Does he have neighbours the other side? Or directly behind?

redboxer321 · 04/03/2024 19:32

It's a good idea @K0OLA1D I will go again and ask surrounding neighbours.
They'd be more likely to be more honest than the seller too.

Can you go and speak to another neighbour?

Across the road from me there is a house with 3 dogs who bark all day when the owner goes out. It is driving the lady in the next door house absolutely mad. I feel so sorry for her. She says she can't go in her lounge because it's so loud. It even disturbs us sometimes and there have been times where we haven't been able to have our window open in the summer.

I have a dog also who will bark at the dogs behind us when she goes out in the garden if they are there. But she just gets called in if that happens as I know how annoying it is

Exactly this.

Definitely worth an ask! If the owners are no longer there to upset as well they're even more likely to be honest

LittleMissSleepyUK · 04/03/2024 19:51

What type of collie? They aren’t all highly strung and there’s a huge difference between a working border and a rough collie for instance. I wouldn’t say it’s a reason not to move in. You might move somewhere without other dogs then someone goes out and gets three very noisy huge dogs

Whatevershallidowithmylife · 04/03/2024 19:56

We have a border and a rough. Border is quiet but rough is not. Both bark at dogs out the front street (stranger danger) but don’t bother the dogs on either side out the back garden.

RickyGervaislovesdogs · 04/03/2024 20:06

What @Devilshands said. Poor dog.

redboxer321 · 04/03/2024 20:09

Welsh sheep dog I think he said, @LittleMissSleepyUK

I wish I'd seen the dog but no sign of her. Perhaps she doesn't exist and the neighbour just enjoys living next door to an empty house!

Well maybe we have been unlucky but when we moved into our house 6 years ago there was a staffy one side and a shih tzu the other. Every time one or both of our dogs were in our garden the dogs both sides would bark non stop. The shih tzu was left in the garden all day until about 9pm even when the owners were there and the staff spent a lot of the day in the garden.

Then one day the staffy got through the fence and attacked one of our dogs almost ripping his face apart. He had to have almost 200 stitches.

The people with the staffy moved and someone with sharpeis moved in and, guess what, they bark every time our dogs are outside.

Our dogs rarely bark and I hate that I have to restrict their time in the garden because of the neighbours' dogs
