It’s starting to look likely that the rescue dog we adopted 4 months ago & were assured had been given a clean bill of health has possibly been hit by a car in the past.

Our vet suspects it & I am devastated. Perhaps I was naive but I could adopt a dog with potential injuries from a car without knowing.

it’s worrying In lots of ways & I just feel really sad about it too

The rescue should have known and should have told you, but, given the way our local rescue operate, I'm not surprised they didn't.
I'm sorry for you that you've been put in this situation.

Thank you - it feels like our dog was just overlooked really ….. I guess she wasn’t bleeding or paralysed on arrival so they haven’t checked her, even forgot to neuter her before sending her to the UK but now here we are with a dog that’s showing serious signs of pain … I just hope we can help with whatever it is that’s wrong ….. she’s the sweetest dog

If she was an overseas rescue, sadly they often come with problems which weren’t treated properly when they initially happened. has she been tested for Brucella?

Yes she has - all diseases are negative I guess if the paperwork is to be believed as I am really feeling quite stupid right now. I mean I can understand the Giardia we treated her for & the nasty infected old wound in between her toes but something this enormous feels wrong to me. Especially from such a huge rescue who say how much they care about the dogs. There’s clearly something very wrong in her pelvis / spine / back legs …… and she was in the rescue for 6 months then another 2 months at the UK rescue who brought her over ….. I just feel so worried & sad about it all …. Mainly for our little dog ….

If you're anywhere near to the area then I would suggest Alistair at the breeders vets at Leadenhall Farm Holbeach Marsh PE12 8HB. He is a brilliant vet and will give you the absolute honest opinion for outlook, potential surgeries, in so far as anyone could.
Don't be put off that the vet is called a breeders vet, he sees lay people too.

An I wish we were but we don’t live nearby - thanks though!

Aw, no problem! It's so hard when you don't know their history or why they're feeling the way they do.

X-rays should be a good starting point and it could well "just" be a badly healed joint and some arthritis which should be fairly manageable with a combination of things like hydrotherapy, painkillers and supplements. There are also injections (I think Librela?) which can be given for arthritis. My cat was recommended the feline version but thankfully he seems to be okay on daily Metacam for now.

Good luck and keep us updated! Hopefully it's nothing too traumatic or expensive.

Hi again - so our vet x-rayed everything at the back end - pelvis, knees, legs, feet, lower spine & nothing 😑 this was what I was so worried about. So next suggestion was MRI scan & we just can’t afford that. We went to see a pain specialist who said our dog is in significant spinal pain - possible trapped nerve or nerve damage. She also said that the scar looked like an impact trauma - possible car accident 🙁 Tried to speak to the rescue again who just say they’ll take her back …… all a right old nightmare & still trying to get out insurance to pay out 🙁

I'm so sorry you have been put in this position, OP. And I'm so sorry for your dog.
Whatever you do don't return her to the rescue. They will likely just leave her in pain and probably try to get her adopted again.
I think in your situation the best thing might be to let her go. I know that sounds awful but she is going to have to have so much treatment, costs are going to rocket and there's no guarantee she won't be in pain or at least discomfort her whole life.
Long term oral pain killers can destroy their digestive system too so you try to fix one problem and cause another.

If you do decide to go ahead with treatment, maybe think about setting up a crowd funding page. £7k sounds so much but it likely won't cover anywhere near what she is going to need even if insurance does pay out.

Best of luck whatever you decide and I hope my post doesn't upset you. I just think it's worth thinking about.

Thank you for your message & I fully appreciate you being brave enough to say it.

i was advised to speak hypothetically to 2 of the big, famous dog rescues in the UK and see what they would do if I handed her in to them. Both said with the vet notes I have they would let her go - they couldn’t re-home her to anyone & out that burden on them.

I just don’t think I can right now ….. I mean she’s eating, up for walks, playing …… and the vet said she could maybe be helped?

to be honest I just feel sick & I also found out this rescue (who have loads of money) paid almost £6’200 in 2 weeks to treat a dog who was dying anyway. So I feel I should fight them more ……

I quite understand. It's so hard when they look happy and are doing all the things a happy dog should do but dogs are so good at masking.
She's landed in paradise with you from where she came from and for now the joy she's found could be over-riding the pain she feels. But it won't do forever and she may be doing herself more damage.
Dogs live in the moment and don't think about the consequences of their actions obviously.

Having said that, I can understand you wanting to give her a chance. If you don't get anywhere with the rescue, then please do think about setting up a go fund me and getting her the very best care you can.
I set up a page for my dog. And I remember feeling how daunting it was to try to get her the care I thought she might need. She actually didn't need to see the specialist in the end so I never took the money.
The way I see it, we as human beings have created this problem, and we as a collective need to help as much as we can. You, as the person who is caring for this dog, shouldn't have any qualms about asking for financial help. You're doing so much already by giving her a home.
Loads of people will disagree with me but not all and anything you can raise will help. If you can post a link here (if it's allowed) or just say something about it if not, I'll be your first donor 🙂

Best of luck whatever you decide to do.
