Meningitis. Any positive stories

Our 3 year red setter has been admitted with possible meningitis.
She deteriorated quickly yesterday. Could not support back legs, pupils dilated.
Neurologists seeing her now.
Poor little thing.
Feeling so very upset.

anyone gone through anything similar and had a positive outcome?
Even if she responds to treatment wondering what her quality of life will be. She’s an active working dog.

Thanks.

I don't have any experience but I pray your lovely dog has a speedy recovery.

Anonanonanon1 · 29/02/2024 18:23

I knew one dog who had it a while ago. Took a while to diagnose but made a full recovery. Hope yours does too x

BathshebaAndGabriel · 29/02/2024 18:26

Thank you both. Good to know it’s possible to make a good recovery.

Poor little thing. She’s normally charging about all over the place.

Waiting for the neurologist to call us.

How is your dog doing?

Majorityofthree23 · 01/03/2024 12:14

My last dog had it twice.... brilliant vet and she recovered both times. Everything crossed for you xx

BathshebaAndGabriel · 01/03/2024 13:59

Thanks for checking in @indianabones1

Spoke to the neurologist earlier. She’s out of ICU and a bit better. Seems to be responding to the steroids. But he’s still very worried about her.
Her MRI showed very raised intracranial pressure. So much that they didn’t want to do the spinal tap. So dangerous.
she did wag her tail this morning, he said.

Hopefully going in the right direction.

We can’t visit her. He thinks will be too distressing for her.
Poor little thing.

Full recovery both times. I think first time we were very lucky as vet said if we hadn't got the steroids into her when we did she might have not made it. She was a tough old thing though xxxx

Sorry you & your truly gorgeous girl are going through this. They are a worry when they are ill.

No experience of meningitis but my older dog has had a lot to contend with in his 12 years. The positive thing I take is how very quickly they bounce back, especially as compared to us humans.

I hope that holds true for your lovely girl.

BathshebaAndGabriel · 01/03/2024 15:59

Thank you @Dearg
Very kind words.

That’s very encouraging to hear @Majorityofthree23.
She sounds like a great dog. So glad she had a good life after illness.

It’s such a worry.

Hey @BathshebaAndGabriel how is your pup doing?

BathshebaAndGabriel · 05/03/2024 08:42

Thanks for checking in @indianabones1
she’s still very poorly and in ICU but the vet thinks a slight improvement so wants to keep treating her.
Poor little thing.

Hopefully she’ll keep improving.

Sounds like she is in the right place and being well looked after. Xxx

indianabones1 · 05/03/2024 11:34

I'm sorry to hear that, I was hoping to hear she was back home and fine. I'm sure she will be soon. Thinking of you.

Our springer had SRMA - steroid-responsive meningitis and arteritis. This is an autoimmune form, not an infection. She was very, very ill for a few days until the vet worked out what was going on, but responded very quickly to steroids and recovered fully. She had a couple of flare-ups in the next few years, but they were much less severe and the vet was able to start steroids immediately because she knew what it was. The flare-ups stopped at three years and she lived a happy normal life until she was thirteen.

I really hope your dog improves today. Ask the vet whether they've considered SRMA. More info here: https://www.fitzpatrickreferrals.co.uk/neurology/steroid-responsive-meningitis-arteritis-srma/

Keeping everything crossed for you and your girl @BathshebaAndGabriel .🙏

BathshebaAndGabriel · 05/03/2024 20:24

Thanks all.
It really means a lot that you’ve reached out. The kindness of strangers.

She might be moved out of ICU tomorrow if she doesn’t have any more seizures.
They took her outside today and she stood up for a bit but can’t walk yet.

Fingers crossed she keeps improving.

thanks again.

Moving in the right direction. Lots of positive thoughts coming your way xxx

WowIlikereallyhateyou · 06/03/2024 07:54

Aww, what a beautiful dog. Hope she continues to improve x

BathshebaAndGabriel · 07/03/2024 17:44

Just thought you’d like to know…
I’ve just been to bring her home.
The vet was happy for her to go. She’s still a bit all over the place and on steroids and anti-epileptic drugs. Wobbly and falls over if too excited.
Hopefully she’ll keep on improving.

On Sunday evening the vet thought he’d have to put her to sleep after the seizures.
So it’s great to have her back and I’m so glad we have her a few more days of treatment.

Thanks for all your good wishes and advice.
Much appreciated.

She’s curled up beside me now.

Xx
