Do I get him smitten to love

I have a little dog - now he is a terrier cross but he recently lost his big brother companion. He's lost . He's clingy and needy .

I thought he would have a high prey drive being a terrier cross , but my neighbour has a 6 month old kitten who treats me house like his own 😂. He came sauntering in the other night and made himself entirely comfortable for the night .

My terrier didn't bark , didn't go for him , as incredibly interested in him and seemed to just want to make friends but the kitty growled at him and my little terrier stayed clear ! Kitty slept at mine all night - my dog slept in my bed as always - no issues between them what so ever even when Kitty came to explore the bedroom .

Friends cat had 4 kittens yesterday. They need homes . My little man is clearly missing animal companionship- I'm wondering whether to take a kitten . I seriously thought he would have a high prey drive being a terrier but he just wanted to be friendly and when the kitty from next door said no he stayed clear .

Kitty from next door stayed over as it was raining and his mum had gone to bed . No issues what so ever .

Would it be a good idea to get a kitten ? My little man is so missing his big bro and really seemed to want to make friends with next doors cat - I'm thinking introducing a tiny kitten he'd be fine and the kitten would get used to him and not be scared of him -

Is that a mad idea ? I'm home most of the time - I work from home 3 days a week sometimes 4 and when I do leave the house it for a few hours and I'm back .

I really thought his terrier instinct would mean he'd chase a cat but he really showed no sign of doing that with the cat - he really wanted to say hello but the cat growled and he backed off ! He's a scottie cross with a cavapoo.
Would he appreciate kitty cuddles or should he remain an only pooch now his big bro has gone ?

Opinions please .

Title should be - "do I get him a kitten "🤷🏻‍♀️

Have you name changed? If your territory is missing a BIG bro I'm not sure a kitten will fill the gap but if you're interested then worth a shot?

damnedwhatever · 24/02/2024 02:38

His companion was a large male dog but he just seems to want animal company - any animal . He really wanted to make friends with the cat and was so sweet but the cat wouldn't have it ! I thought a kitten would be used to him from day one .
But I do live not far from a main road which worries me .
That said I wouldn't let a cat out at night . I just don't know if the dog would chase a cat outside of the house - I'm thinking if he knew a kitten as his companion he wouldn't . He surprised me not chasing or barking at the kitty when he slept here .

Was we on another thread together? For pet loss? It so you're little man seemed so gentle but maybe ask neighbour to borrow the kitten a couple of days as a trial?

damnedwhatever · 24/02/2024 03:03

Yes lovely I name changed. I kiss my big bear but so does my little
Man .

He just seems so desperate for some furry company. I think he's nanny a kitten .

Next doors is too old to get used to my boy - but I thought a wee kitten wouldn't know to be scared and he'd probably just love a little furry friend .

I got my dog a kitten after losing my older dog. It took a few days for my dog and the kitten to get used to each other as the kitten was very scared (hissing and hiding) but within a couple of weeks they become best friends and am now inseparable.

Forhecksake · 24/02/2024 03:14

I've always had dogs and cats together and loved their interactions. Often the cat would follow along on walks to see where the dog was going.

Helplessandheartbroke · 24/02/2024 03:15

@damnedwhatever I thought it was you lovely! You've been missed! Hope you're doing ok. Go for it! You're wee boy will settle well x

damnedwhatever · 24/02/2024 03:24

Thank you . I've missed the thread but after name change didn't think posting would make sense .

I miss my big bear so so much . And it hurts to see the little man so
Lost and so looking for furry company.

Kittens are a big commitment though - my last cats were 23 years old before
They passed .

And I worry about the main road .

I'd only get a kitten if you really want one, not just as a friend for your dog. Have you had cats before? They're a whole new kettle of fish with the litter box, etc.

That being said, our dog doesn't get on great with other dogs and but really needed some company. We got our cat at 18 months and after the initial warm up period, he was just what the dog needed - he's respectful and gentle as anything with him!

damnedwhatever · 24/02/2024 05:06

Ive had 2 cats that lived to mid 20s ! So they really are a massive commitment.
I do love them . I worry that I'm near a road .

We have a dog and three cats - he adores them though it's not reciprocated by the eldest who generally snacks him on the nose 😂

Darklane · 24/02/2024 20:27

Bunch of terriers here
My late cat ruled them all, kept them all in line. Used to wait behind the back door & give each one a good clip round the ear with her front paw as they came over the doorstep, just to remind them who was boss.

damnedwhatever · 24/02/2024 20:29

Oh god I'm sort of tempted to take one of friend's kittens but I worry so much about the main road

Getting a kitten doesn’t mean it’ll want to be friends with your dog.

My current cat has lived with 6 different dogs (deaths, fostered ones and currently we have 2 so not as high as it sounds, lol),she’s only actually willingly interacted with 2 of them.

She’s fairly friendly with one of the current dogs, the other she basically pretends he doesn’t exist unless he’s trying to interact with her and then she’ll chase him off.

So I wouldn’t get a kitten for the dog, if you want one, fair enough, but not for him.

Helplessandheartbroke · 24/02/2024 20:36

Catio... x

damnedwhatever · 25/02/2024 02:52

Yeah I think he's just gonna have to get used to being an only child !

I'm around most of the time .
