Hi all,

My staffie is on the AVA fish kibble (from Pets at Home) , and I've been wondering if it's the best for her. She gets fresh tripe, chicken liver & breast, & feet, whole fish, and trachea often too. Came across Orijen kibble today, anyone know if nutritionally it's a lot better? Double the price, so wondering if it's worth it!

Origen is one of the best kibbles nutrition and raw ingredient wise on the market, definitely worth the price. No grains/fillers like most other brands. It’s the only one our golden retriever will touch!

Only thing I’d be cautious about is that they’ve recently been bought over by Mars so the recipe will likely change soon for the worse.. Definitely get a bag while it’s still good!

No one will be able to tell you what to feed your dog OP, it's a very tricky subject!
There's this website allaboutdogfood.co.uk that can help you.

However, if your dog seems happy and content with her food, I would be tempted to not fix something that isn't broken!

@FastFood thanks for the website link! And you're probably right, that's exactly what my partner said! 😂

@MaloneMeadow

Thanks so much! Has your retriever been quite healthy on it? I'm always on the lookout for how to improve her food and it does seem this kibble is very good.

Yep - we had her on AVA initially until I actually looked at the ingredients list and was shocked at how low the meat content was. The difference has been night and day - her coat has improved so much on Origen, she actually seems to enjoy eating it and her poos are far less runny (quite a sensitive tummy like most retrievers!).

Agree with this. If a dog is happy eating their food and healthy then don't mess with it.

My three all eat different food. Sigh. It's what works for them though...

Dog food is an absolute minefield to navigate. Nutrition rvn on Instagram is quite a useful source.

Darklane · 21/02/2024 15:49

With all the extra good fresh food that you are feeding her I wouldn’t think that changing to a different kibble would make that much difference to be honest, especially as she’s happy on her current one.
i mostly feed home cooked same as you with a bit of kibble added just for the crunch really but they are just very little dogs.

Mine doesn't get a lot of kibble but I give her Feelwells. Decent meat content and it's pressed rather than extruded so gentler on her digestion. That's the theory anyway!
Gentle is the same although lower meat content and contains rice.
Wilsons and Walker and Drake are two others if interested.
