My dog stinks!

2 Labradors, 7 years and 4 years
The younger one stinks like an old goat!
His mouth, ears and coat are fine He’s just been to the vets for annual check up
He doesn’t roll in fox poo or anything although he will gobble the odd dog poo! 🤢
Hes fed exactly the same as the older one who smells of nothing
I’m reluctant to start bathing frequently him because of stripping his natural oils
His bed will smell after a few hours of him laying on it
Any thoughts?
Hes fed Skinners and a little raw topper

Stress?
Stress can make a dog stink.
Fungal infection between toes?
Decaying teeth?

Keep his bedding washed or yr house will be stinky.
You could bathe him once a month?
Poor dog and you, for being worried about him.

You are obviously taking good care of him, he's healthy, has been checked by vet, you keep things clean etc. I've just lost the sweetest boy, who, despite having all the care you mention, he just stank. My other dogs never have. I just tried to keep on top of things and used air and fabric fresheners. The smell has gone with him, but, needless to say, I'd swap this pleasant smelling house to have him back in a heartbeat.

lifebeginsaftercoffee · 14/02/2024 15:38

Allergies? What's his general skin condition like?

DancefloorAcrobatics · 14/02/2024 18:44

🤔 might just be his natural body odour, or the food or stress or a hidden illness.

AInightingale · 14/02/2024 18:51

My dog started to stink at about 7 years of age. Previously I'd never minded her being on the beds (much) but now no way. I've just put a cushion cover in the wash because it was on the floor and now has 'that smell.

Vet cleaned anal glands, made no difference. Does the dog's diet include wheat? There was a slight improvement when I moved to the grain free stuff. But I think it's probably an internal glandular problem and we're stuck with it.

I had a problem with a chocolate Labrador but that was his ears in the end. As long as you cleaned them out regularly he was OK.

I'm not going to go there with fox shit. It stinks and its fucking disgusting.

I think some dogs just smell different. I've had lots of Dobermann (male and female) over many years, none had a strong odour until I fostered (and kept) the only one left now, he was 2 when he arrived and in dreadful condition, a bag of bones with ears like bad leather from ear mites, he had a particular smell and in the beginning I thought it was to do with neglect. He's 14 now and far from neglected but still has a very strong unusual odour, the only other difference I've noticed between him and my other Dobermann is that his coat feels oily. He's a pure dote, almost deaf, poor sight, his medication costs €150 a month, his food is €75 and I wish he could live forever, stink included.

I’m going to try a different food -
The Skinners one that forms the basis of his diet is primarily wheat…
Ive also noticed he is scratching slightly more than my other dog. It’s not parasites as he wears a Seresto collar
So going to try wheat free and see if that makes any difference
Also bought a pet friendly Febreeze! 😉😆

I find food is one of the biggest culprits for smelly dogs. Cheap food in particular which tends to have a lot of grain. My last dog stunk on James Wellbeloved.

Wallywobbles · 15/02/2024 18:30

Our cocker spaniel was the smelliest puppy ever. Eventually we discovered it was the folds in his mouth.

Wallywobbles · 15/02/2024 18:31

And when I say eventually. It was years.
