Looking for Senior dog anaesthetic success stories (14 years old)

I am having to make the decision in putting my old dog under anaesthesia for tooth extraction and I am worried sick he won't make it.

He is a small dog - 5/6kg

He is 14 years old but has no underlying health conditions and most are shocked when they find out his age as he still has days where he will play & run around like a puppy! He is not showing any signs of pain at all (I know dogs can hide pain very well!)

We have just come back from the vets and obviously they have to explain that there is a risk in any dog being put under let alone my 14 year old, but I'd like to hear some success stories of dogs who have made it through to help my decision. Also the not so successful stories ...

My dog had mast cell cancer and was put under to remove the lump at just under 14 years old. He was very dopey for about 36 hours but back to normal not long after.

That's hopeful for my little one. The vet said he will work very quick so mine won't be under for that long at all ..

My dog is 6kg and has had many dentals under GA, the last one when he was almost 16, no issues at all. He is now 17 and thinking we need to have another dental under GA. Of course ideally we wouldn't at his age but it will benefit him.
Hopefully your pooch will be fine ☺️

17! That's fantastic!

Unless it's causing your dog significant pain, at his age, I wouldn't risk it.

I've got a 14 yo dog (caveat, he does have a heart condition) and I would risk a GA for anything thar wasn't life threatening or affecting his quality of life.

We are possibly facing the same. Dog is almost 13 and in recent years has had two anesthetics, one for removal of numerous teeth and second for a cancerous sarcoma on her paw. has been a bit unwell recently with gastric bleed and when vet examined her she said she has tooth decay again and her breath stinks. I'm worried as to what will happen with the teeth if left as not sure she would stand another GA.

This is the thing we can't tell if he is in pain but we know the teeth are rotten and infections can spread if left. I worry that further down the line it will just get worse if we don't sort the issue now

Did the vet recommend another general anaesthesia?

My 3.5kg yorkie had anaesthesia for tooth extraction aged 12 - had it Thursday afternoon, bit groggy overnight and back with the zoomies by Friday evening.

Like yours, you wouldn't have known his age from looking at him bouncing around. He has no top front teeth now, so the most adorable little face

Aww, your Yorkie is tiny! I'm so glad he was ok.. mine doesn't act his age at all. Seems so happy, bouncy and healthy other than some bad back teeth

Vet here, I anaesthetised my own dog at 15 without any worries. I wouldn't be overly concerned unless your dog had other health issues! Anaesthesia is a risk in any patient, but I've honestly had more issues with young animals who have never had an anaesthetic. You will probably also be offered the option of doing blood tests first to check his liver and kidneys so they can tailor the anaesthetic.

Please may I message you privately for a second opinion on something?

Yes, of course!

Yes, of course!

Thank you. I have messaged. Apparently messages can only be viewed on the internet version not the app Confused
