Anyone know about dachshunds?

Hello. I could do with some advice please. l’m an experienced little dog owner. But all of mine have been crossbreeds.
I have four. All mixtures and doing well.
very sadly my mum died suddenly last week and I’ve bought her 9 year old mini dachshund home to live with me. He’s pretty big for a mini
he is a nice boy, clingy, terrible breath and not house trained!
luckily he isn’t overweight and hasn’t had any issues I know of.
he has settled in really well with my others, particularly my mini pin/chi
I’m just really worried I’m going to break him. It’s the long back that scares me. My mum has lost a few of her dachshunds to back injuries over the years ( don’t have a go, I’ve only just lost her)

of course I’m going to do my research but would really appreciate any wisdom from sausage lovers out there.
its all a bit raw and upsetting and I’m desperate to do my best for him.

thanks

Hello MrsDV - its good to see you on the boards again - you wont recognise this posting name but I still think of you and of Billie.

Sorry to hear that things have been tricky and that you have lost your mum. I wish you all the best

Thank you x

it gets me down when I am feeling low but then I have a good day and I’m fine
tbh I think that’s pretty common after getting a new dog.

Plus you've lost your DM and you're not well yourself.

He absolutely is rehomable. You don't have to look after him because you feel that's not an option. If it's something you've been thinking about do speak to The Red Foundation Flowers

Thank you for your lovely words. He’s here to stay. He is a monumental pain but I have worse! 😊

Right so pita sausage has settled in with a few adjustments
he is no longer allowed to sleep with me due to being very snappy in the mornings when I tried to get him downstairs. He is fine with that
housetraining has not improved despite the back door being open all the time.
he apparently hates pigeons so has to park at them
he can spot a dog on the telly a mile off and has to bark at them too
will go anywhere in the garden he bloody elk wants to including half way up a lilac tree and on the gazebo roof
im struggling to get weight on him. He went for walks whilst with my mum
but spent the rest of the time on the sofa with her. He never stops moving here . He plays with my chi x constantly and runs about the garden all day. How much do you feed your larger mini dachshunds?

id really appreciate any advice

Have you tried switching to a lower calorie dog food? Our DDog was a "little overweight" read that as obese with rolls of fat when we got them and I swapped them to Senior Dog Food for a while, was really strict with treats and absolutely no human food ever.

My DDog hand t been walked in a long time either so a regular walking schedule helped too.

Can't suggest anything about the pigeons though. That one might just be a breed trait? Grin

I feed mine wellness core but they aren't very active so I feed less than the recommended amount!

My first dachshund barked at everything from blackbird size up.

The second one CBA - he'd pretend to ignore them. Pigeons would walk unhurriedly away from him.

Does he actually need more weight if he's happy and active? Much better be on the slim side than overweight, he doesn't look really skinny in the photo.

Sorry totally misread your post. Yes, he looks a perfectly healthy weight to me too.

TheFirstMrsDV · 11/05/2024 16:48

Thank you for responses. That photo doesn’t really show why I’m worried re his weight. I can see his ribs and his spine. He just doesn’t look quite right and I prefer my dogs to be slim. He has plenty of energy. He may need a bit of time to adjust.
