Territorial barking

ChenDog's latest wheeze appears to be territorial barking, which means that he's started barking at all the neighbours' dogs if they walk past or if we see them when we're in the street.

I restrict his view of the street by not letting him into the living room unless I'm there, although very occasionally someone leaves the door open and he sneaks in. If that does happen and he starts barking I move him immediately by telling him to get down (which he does) and telling him 'quiet' which I then reward once he's stopped. Not sure if that's right though.

Any ideas how I can manage this barking, both inside and outside? I'm mortified, although fortunately my neighbours are very understanding.

It’s not territorial. It’s likely frustration. Have a look at click the trigger, LAT, engage disengage.

Yes i would 100% use LAT technique/ training

It doesn't sound territorial to me if it also happens in the street, it sounds like he's become a bit of a frustrated greeter.

In the house, I would go for privacy film on the windows so he can't see out at all (it will still let light in). Outside, you'll need to work on keeping your distance, distracting him and rewarding him for ignoring them.

I’m using the LAT technique but not really getting anywhere with it at close quarters. It’s fine if there’s some distance but if we’re walking out of the street and we meet one of the neighbour’s and their dog then off he goes. It’s not helped by the fact we’re a small cul de sac, so not many options.

I’m booked onto a frustrated greeter training session in a couple of weeks so hopefully that will help too.

Nobody gets it 100% right. In those situations just walk away. The training will be working but it takes a while. Keep at it.

(my dog is a reformed frustrated greeter but we still have the odd moments usually when we arrive somewhere and she’s excited).

Thanks - I’ll keep at it, hopefully he’ll get the hang of it at some point!
