First dog in many years. She's brilliant and has settled very well. She has asked to go outside to poo for several weeks now, however wee is hit and miss! She will wee outside but if weather is bad she decides no, I'll do it indoors thanks 😂. Obviously not a problem as she is a puppy and is learning. I just wondered if anyone has any tips on how to convince her to poo AND wee outside??? I'm trying everything I can think of but she's more than happy to just go on the carpet!

You need to go back to the beginning and take her out every 20 minutes. Huge praise and treats if she pees outside. No fuss or attention if she pees inside - just clean it up. She'll get it.

I'm watching with interest because I'm an experienced dog owner but my one year old dog still wees and poos indoors sometimes, especially if it's bad weather. I've hung bells on the back door because my friend trained her pup with them but dog is afraid of them! How does your pup ask to go outside?

blazethrough · 04/02/2024 17:44

@Lavenderosa she will go to the back door and jump up, usually with a little whimper. For a wee there's no signal, she just goes.

@Lougle thank you, I will go back to the beginning. I think I've taken my eye off the ball so to speak and I need to be more proactive with her.

Do you just put them outside in the morning when you get up and at night before you go to bed ? With a walk.in between that's what I've done and it seems to work?

their bladder control is awful at this age just keep taking her out every 30 minutes if you can and accept the odd accident she will get there also they do excited wees so it could be that.

She’s the same age as my girl, who is good, except when she isn’t. Keep taking her out all the time. Lots of praise abs treats when she goes outside. Ignore it when she doesn’t. The penny will drop. Eventually.

The only way to teach her is to take her outside regularly and keep a close eye on her at all times. Never let her out of your sight. Look out for the classic signs of sniffing the ground and possibly circling. It’s very hard work but it does pay off.

This.

Every time she wakes after a nap.
Every time she has a game or playtime.

Give her a treat if she goes outside as well. If she’s mostly trained but just won’t go out on some occasions she knows she being naughty when she tiddles inside - dogs are intelligent, even puppies. So she might require extra encouragement I.e a treat for going outside

I accidentally trained my pup to do this, not with bells, but I do leave the keys in the back door when I'm in. If he wants to go out at any time, he has learned to jingle the keys with his paw, so we all hear he wants to go out!

Take them out after every nap, every meal, after drinking, after playing/excitement. And then plenty of times in between.

Are they crate trained as that can help too.

blazethrough · 05/02/2024 11:54

Thank you for all of your replies! I have gone back to basics with her today, so far, so good. I'll persevere and make sure I take her out every half hour. She is crate trained and will always go after a nap.
