Hard but moveable spot/lump on dog

HelpMebeok · 31/01/2024 20:30

Just found a small flattish hard but very moveable lump on dogs back. No colour to it. dog is 4 years old.

think it may be a cyst or lipoma. Will take her to the vet as soon as I can get in but
now worrying.

can anyone talk me down.

Movable is always a good sign- worrying lumps tend to be tethered to the underlying tissue. I expect your diagnosis is probably correct

As a vet I disagree with this have seen so many cancerous lumps that are moveable. No way to tell without a sample.

Never post asking for reassurance on mumsnet, OP! People will always pop up and say it’s a worst case scenario:;

’My husband sends smiley face emojis to this woman.’

’He’s having an affair! LTB’

Not a dig at PPs at all!! But never come to mumsnet for help with something you’re worried about! I’ve never seen it do anyone any good…

Hope DDog is okay!

My dog has a small lump on his neck. He's quite elderly but vet said it's not a cyst and if he were younger she'd anaesthetise him and remove. We decided to keep an eye on it as he's in every few weeks for arthritis acupuncture anyway. Anyway, it went away!

I hope you're dog is similarly cancer free! When is the vet appointment?

lurcherlove · 01/02/2024 07:52

My dog (not a lurcher) has a couple of lumps that sound like this. The vet said it happens when they are getting overweight - they are just fatty lumps. Nothing to worry about, but to keep an eye for changes (and get more exercise - our dog had an injury at the time hence the weight gain).

PaulCostinRIP · 01/02/2024 08:03

I wouldn't waste time going to the vet.

Lipomas are harmless lumps that start in fat cells stored in tissue around the body and are not usually painful. They accumulate more fat as they grow and are more likely in middle-aged to elderly dogs.

OP has already said she's taking her dog to the vet, why come in with the fear factor?
Not helpful.
I'm not a vet, but OP I've had my own dogs with movable lumps and known friend's dogs as well, and they were all just cysts or lipomas.
Try not to anticipate the worst.
And if it does happen, you will deal with it as best as you and the vets can, for your dog's sake.
Good luck!

PaddingtonsHat · 01/02/2024 08:49

She asked to be talked down!
Whilst there are always exceptions to the rule, she has a vet appointment booked so it can be assessed.

Nannyfannybanny · 01/02/2024 08:54

Doggo is 8,had movable lumps for a few years, now got a few more. Regular checks at home, and on Vax days. Previous 2 dogs lived to 17, not a single lump. One before, lumps around 6 years old, one aspirated and checked. Was a cyst.

muddyford · 01/02/2024 10:59

If you can move it and get your fingers behind it it's unlikely to be anything dire.

Darklane · 02/02/2024 18:42

I’ve had lots of dogs over the years & many have had these. None have turned out to be serious, just fatty lumps or cysts. Going to the vet will at least put your mind at rest but don’t worry ninety.nine times out of ten such lumps are nothing much.
The person up thread who claims to be a vet( ,who knows on the internet, I could claim to be a brain surgeon) couldn’t possibly know without seeing the dog so why cause the lady needless worry, just unkind to my mind.

CMOTDibbler · 02/02/2024 18:49

Ddog2 has lots of lipomas which are fairly firm and movable, but they are harder when small. Ddog1 otoh has a lipoma which is under the muscle and looks very different - our vet did a quick biopsy and checked it, but its a boring lipoma. He only has the one, but its a cracker!

Because if she just listened to other ( non-vet) posts she might decide not to get it checked out after all.

Lonecatwithkitten has been on here for years and years, and I’ve seen enough of her posts to be 99% confident that she is a vet. ( from another vet, who name changes so no one will vouch for me🙂)

Both my dogs have different lumps. I mentioned at the vets and they just said keep an eye on them and come back if you are concerned because they increase in size etc.

My dogs are fairly frequent flyers at the vets so I just mentioned at my next visit. Definitely take your dog and hopefully be reassured.

As she asked to be talked down from a state of worry, and definitely stated she was taking her dog to the vet as soon as she can, she seems an unlikely candidate to then not bother with a vet opinion. I don't think any posters advised NOT to bother with the vet.

Bannaandcustard · 03/02/2024 07:20

Definitely take to the vets for peace of mind.

My dog has several of these. My vet explained them as like skin tags on dogs! I took him for the first one on his face (he’s had it 8 years) and it was a 2 minute consultation so hopefully yours will be the same

GoingDownLikeBHS · 03/02/2024 22:48

When are you going to the vet @HelpMebeok ? I'm in the same boat. DDog7 had one which seemed like an obvious lipoma, vet agreed. 3 months later he has half a dozen some of which are small and hard. We're at the vet on Wednesday for another check, now I'm starting to think his stomach is swollen as well. Its a huge worry as previous dog had to be put down aged 5 and never got over that so I couldn't bear to lose another one so young.

Hope our doggos are fine, or might need the lumps checked then turn out to be nothing but do let us know how you get on OP. (our appointment is Wednesday)
