Please depart your wisdom on owning this breed and where to get one, as well as how much they cost on average per month. And how much we should expect to pay for a puppy (wildly differing prices online).

My family had a beautiful girl when I was a teen and she was perfect. Have a 6yo and wanting to get one soon. Please help me do my research.

Tell us more about yourself, your (and partner if one lives with you) daily routine/work pattern, house and garden, how many walks per day and for how long you'd be able to give the dog, your knowledge of training.

Boxers are beautiful dogs but very lively and need very systematic, dedicated training as well as a lot of exercise and stimulation. They also can - to quote a friend - "take a long time to grow a brain".

I grew up from age 3 with a Boxer puppy so absolutely adore them.

Thank you! I'm home every day but work 3 of those, partner is home 2 of those days. Both runners so could take dog on a daily run, I would also like an incentive to walk more another points in the day.

No knowledge of training as it wasn't up to me when we had one before but I did take her on walks when still living at home and I remember spending many hours with her in the middle of the night when we first got her!! Do boxers start off in a crate at night these days? Don't think that was a thing when we had our previous dog.

Would definitely get a female as I don't want a huge dog.

Boxers - like some other breeds - do like having company so if you can make it so she's never left for long days at a time, that's good.

Running with a dog- do ensure she also gets "sniff walks", because running might give the dog a cardio-vascular workout but it doesn't stimulate in the same way as a "dog led" walk does and they need at least a couple of these - long ones - every day.

I've never been a crate advocate as a routine thing to do but I know many people swear by it. Obviously, even a female Boxer will need quite a big crate so do bear that in mind if you go ahead with the crate!

There is SO much advice on dog training available online these days - and everyone will emphasise socialising the dog as soon as she's fully vaccinated. Puppy classes are good, too.

Research before getting the puppy is absolutely crucial. Immerse yourself in reading about socialisation, training, etc.

And ensure you research a reputable, registered breeder - and be prepared to wait for a litter to be born from such a breeder.

Boxers are the best!

I've had 2 males and 1 female boxer over my life. The second male and female were together.

The males were less mental than the female!

All of them were great around kids.

The second male loved obedience training and agility.
The female....nuts....too busy saying hello to everyone!

The first male died at 13. He was black and white and amazing to have as a child
He had reoccurring cancer which needed almost annual treatment. He was my childhood love.

The second male died at 6 of cancer, with no warning. He did suffer with his stomach and it took a raw diet to sort him out. This can be expensive, especially with the vet investigations and different food trials.

The female died at 8 from bone cancer. She was expensive with vets, cysts, ACL tears, lumps and bumps, tests and surgeries. She became uninsurable.

The female did become aggressive to other dogs in the months before the male died. This improved once he had passed. However, she was strong, and I had to walk well away from other people during her aggressive period.

Boxers are prone to cancers, hip issues and the like.

I'm still wishing for another though. Nothing fills your heart or home like a boxer does.

My advice would be research, research, research. If you can Joeys Boxer Rescue Liverpool have plenty of boxers waiting for homes. If you want a puppy make sure you go to a reputable registered breeder and check bloodlines and health history. Although this isn't always a guarantee.

Good luck.

Oh and the males were taller than the female, but she was broader and definitely the strongest, mentally and physically!
