Food for newly spayed female labrador retriever

Hi, we have recently had our almost 2 year old Lab spayed. She was a rescue which we got at 11 months, we were advised to wait until her 3 months after her first season to have the procedure.

I was just wondering if anyone had any advice on whether we should be feeding her food containing HRT. I completely forgot to ask the vet so might end up ringing them, but thought I would try the wise MNetters first. I don't want to spend a fortune, but will pay for decent food, she has Royal Canine at the moment. Thanks in advance.

Just to add we have a petsafe automatic feeder. The Royal Canine pellets were too big, so we changed to Arden Grange.

I personally wouldn't feed any dog of mine Royal Canin unless they required a specific diet for allergies.

Whatever you feed, just make sure it's good quality and not full of fillers.

I would feed her two meals a day and replace a quarter of the kibble with vegetables.
Dogs put on weight easily after neutering and need less food than previously.
I actually had to reduce my bitches food by a third. She's now nearly 13 and still slim.

Thank you both for your replies. The vet did warn us she will be prone to weight gain. That is a brilliant idea to feed 25% veg thanks. @Anonanonanon1 .

I guess I just feel a bit bad, as I am on HRT, early menopause and it helped so much with the symptoms @catelynjane

Some dogs gain weight and some don’t. I’d concentrate on a good quality high meat content food (RC is not one!) and just keep an eye. My last dog didn’t gain weight at all. Current one too young to be spayed but we’ll just keep an eye on things. As PP said you can bulk with veg and some fruit and lots of natural treats are low calorie.

Thank you @survivingunderarock yes RC seems to have some deal with the vets, where they recommend it. I work in pharmacy, similar happens. Will go for the high meat, so far no weight gain. Thank you for your reply
