Which (small/medium sized) car to take a medium crate in the boot?

My son has a 4 month old Sprocker spaniel who absolutely hates being in the car when it is on the move. My son drives a Honda Civic.

Initially he put the puppy in a fabric box designed for placing on the passenger seat, but the puppy chewed through the straps and tried to jump into my son’s lap when he was driving.

He then bought a dog guard to attach to the rear seats to keep the puppy in the boot….the puppy was fine on short drives but last Sunday he went on a 20 minute drive…..and the puppy had chewed and badly tore the rear seat backs (including the leather). This is about 200 pounds worth of damage!

My son then bought a medium sized crate (he didn’t want to crate train him) but the puppy is very happy to go in it and rest/sleep. Unfortunately as the Honda Civic has a sloping rear closing door, the crate won’t fit unless he has both rear seats down.

My son is now looking for a car with automatic transmission which will take a medium sized crate without having to fold the rear seats and turn his car into a two seater! Obviously nothing with a sloping roof and he can’t have a large SUV (we have a Hyundai Tucson) which won’t fit into his small driveway. He’s happy to buy a hybrid but a car which is about 18 months - 3 years old.

Does anyone have any ideas or can recommend their car please?

Has he tried a sloping dog crate
this fills our boot, but at least we can use the back seats. Ddog has plenty of space.

@BiscuitTins - wow, I didn’t know that these sloping crates existed! Halfords and pet stores are missing a trick here!

I’ll pass on the link to my son, but I do know that he definitely wants to change his car soon.

Well either way it might give him more flexibility.
we’ve had the crate 2 years. Use it several times a week and it’s good as new

My puppy ( cocker spaniel 6 months) has just chewed half way through our seatbelt 🤬 we usually harness him to the seatbelt and use a muzzle as hes a bad tendency to chew every thing he can. But on this occasion we forgot to put his muzzle on and noticed 2 minutes in and noticed he'd gotten half way through it,
We've sent it off for repair.

I have used a crate with sloping side which fits just in the boot of my six year old golf. Perfect for my working springer.

You can buy crates with a slope that more or less matches the slope of the hatch.

Barjo makes car specific boot cages (and they’re great)
