Which insurance company for dogs? Do you have dog insurance?

My insurers, Animal Friends, increased the premiums for my two dogs by 50% and I want to look around to see if I can get cheaper cover. Which insurance company do you use?

And also, one of my colleagues (who has an elderly dog), has stopped paying insurance and instead pays a set amount into another account each month. Is this worth considering?

My dogs are currently 4 and 5 years old, so not elderly and don't currently have any health issues (I think I used the insurance cover once so far - possibly not even in the last 12 months, when one of dogs ate some raisins). Thanks!

I have 2 labs. 8 year old is insured with Pet Plan -£45 per month . 13 year old is no longer insured. We were with John Lewis and they wanted £2500 when he hit 8 ( for £7k) cover. So we went with savings instead. It’s worked out fine for us. Clearly he had his worst health as a younger dog ( cancer included)

I would say, at your dogs’ ages, it’s better to keep the insurance going. They have a lot of years of potential accidents and illness ahead, and you won’t want to make tough decisions based on cost.

A recent health issue for my older dog has cost £3k. Within our savings budget for vet costs, but of course it has to be paid immediately. As long as PetPlan stay reasonable for my younger dog, I will stay with them.

Everypaw they're brilliant and pay out quickly. X

KC - £40 a month for one (£50+30) for my other two dogs.

Absolutely amazing. Super high cover (over £15k). Never had them not pay out and they don’t crank the price up after a claim

I am with Pet Plan not cheap but cover is amazing for nearly all of my dogs

My oldie is 14 and not insured. However just having some blood tests for him recently cost over £300. He is having a heart scan that will cost £1000.

If you do not insure you will have to have a lot of money set by or availability of a lot of money if you do not want money to stop you being able to make decisions for your dogs health.

We're with PetPlan. It isn't cheap but not more than comparable cover. They are excellent. I paid £254 for medication for my big dog yesterday. One is a new medication so I'll lose £100 but the other £254 will be paid in about 3 days time. I just ask the vet practice to add it to the portal.

Sainsburys bank. Not sure about now but they used to have the same underwriters as pet plan at a much better price. I have £7000 cover, lifetime policy and it's about £35 per month

Avoid animal friends at all costs.

I was with Napo until the rules change recently and my dog is no longer deemed insurable. I would definitely recommend.

Lougle · 18/01/2024 12:15

@Mindyour0wn sorry to hear that. It must be difficult to be in that situation.

@HelenHywater I find PetPlan so easy to deal with. I phoned yesterday to tell them that our puppy is going to be an assistance dog. They put me on hold, spoke to the underwriters, then came back to say that they've indorsed her policy to cover her for all duties as an assistance dog and at work.

Animal friends £9.50 a month for mine.
I was originally with pet plan (four weeks free trial) but they wanted £140 per month 😳.
No that is not a typo they must have thought my dog was diamond encrusted 22 carrot gold!!!!
