Insurance advice please!

Hi,

Looking for some advice. I have two small dog (puggles) and we had insurance covering them from ManyPets. Before the new year, I decided to go through all my direct debits and see if I could make any switches as I’m awful for just letting insurances just roll over rather than shopping around to compare for the best deal.

Upon doing this, I found a cheaper quote with John Lewis. Checked the proposed new policy, matched all our needs - great. Made sure that it started the exact date the old policy ended - the 28th December, just to make sure we were always covered. So from 28th, our policy with manypets ended and also from the 28th the new policy with John Lewis starts.

Fast forward to this week, I find a lump on my older (9yrs) dogs leg. I know most end up being nothing to worry about but wanting to get it checked, I took him the vet and get it tested.

Just went to double check my new policy (absolutely KICKING myself for not doing this earlier) and it states it will not cover any illnesses discovered in the first 14 days. We are at 12 days. I will ring up John Lewis to confirm in the morning and hopefully the test results will come back fine, but worst case scenario and it is something serious, does anyone have any advice? Is there a surcharge I can pay so my policy will cover this?
if not, does anyone have any experience on how much this would be? Just sitting here worrying now!
thank you in advance

This is a common issue with pet insurance it just doesn't work like house or car insurance unfortunately, I have changed insurance but talked them into double insuring so that ours is always covered. I doubt that the insurance will cover it if there's a problem however you could try asking.
Hope your dog is ok, probably just a fat lump

The exclusion policy exists to stop people from only taking out insurance when they've found out their pet is sick or hurt, so it's very unlikely that you'll be covered for this I'm afraid. It wouldn't hurt to ask but be very prepared for them to say no.

I hope your dog is okay. Fatty lumps are very common in older dogs.

Thank you both. Reassuring to hear that lumps are common - fingers crossed it is just a fatty lump!

When I changed insurance, I overlapped them for a fortnight for this reason.
Hopefully everything will be ok with your dog.
