New puppy is so high energy. I'm exhausted

I've got an almost 3 month old puppy.

We've had her nearly 4 months.

She's absolutely beautiful but gosh she's very boundy and bitey and scrabbly.

I spend my days deflecting from the biting and tugging and scrabbling by passing her enrichment toys and kibble on the guise of puzzles, which she'll take, solve and be back over at me scrabbling for the next one so quickly. Its absolutely exhausting.

She sleeps exceedingly well 10+ hours a night and then a few 2ish hours naps in the day. As I sense one of these naps coming, I'll leave the house and she self settles well for that couple of hours.

It's predominantly me caring for her all day though I try to escape for another couple of hours in the evening when DH is home.

Any reassurances, suggestions, or advice for more occupying enrichment puzzles please?

What training are you doing with her? Sounds like her brain needs tiring out a bit more. What breed is she?

FiveRings · 07/01/2024 13:58

She won't be fully vaccinated against lepto until early February, though the vet has suggested I can take her outside from 12th Jan as she should be covered for everything else by then. I should be avoiding rat likely areas in that fortnight.

She knows Sit, touch, down.

We're working on leave and middle.

I should be working on lead skills on my patio I know. She's just do bouncy and tuggy it's difficult because she doesn't seem to have anything in her demeanour except Frenetic

What kind of dog?

FiveRings · 07/01/2024 14:01

We've also got some environmental factors that are making me low, bereavement and other affecting factors. I think I suffer with Mental well being issues in this season too.

It's all getting on top of me.

Sorry. She's a golden retriever

No one can tell you when the crazy will end unless you say what the breed is. Aka. Spaniels are always a bit nuts, German shepherds are land sharks until a couple of years old.

Sorry just noticed you’ve posted her breed and picture.

FiveRings · 07/01/2024 14:05

Just noticed typo in OP.

We've had her nearly four weeks.

Zero advice but oh my goodness she is adorable.

MyLadyTheKingsMother · 07/01/2024 14:06

Your doing great op. Puppies are bouncy and full of energy, just like toddlers.

JingleSnowmanTree · 07/01/2024 14:07

God I wish I slept that well!

I presume you meant she's 3 months and you've had her 4 weeks??

althoughbthat probably feels like a lifetime right now, it's really not very long.

itll be much better as soon as you can get her out for sniffy (not long) walks. That sniffing about will tire her out.

If she's on dry food, try hiding some of her daily allowance around the house, or if you don't want to do that on the lawn or on a mat/rug with deep pile.

a kong with puppy butter (like peanut butter but better for them) or wedging a bit of cheese in it. Any bone/antlers she's old enough for.

it's brilliant she settles for good naps in the day, but why are you rushing out when she does? (Do you have stuff you need to do or just going out?). I'd be putting my feet up watching her nap enjoying the peace.

Do you have any friends who would love to come & cuddle/play with her?? I'd love to be invited 😀plus it would remind me why I don't need to get a puppy just now 😂😂

Keep going - goldens are hard work at the beginning but if you get the training right they are the absolute best dogs!!

I've dropped her lunch as I'm concerned about how much fooim giving her as treats.

I use kibble, mashed sweet potatoes, Greek yoghurt, cream cheese frozen in little metal bowls.

I fill kongs and freeze them.

She's got a sliding puzzle that I pop kibble in on peanut butter then freeze as otherwise she solves it in approx 30 seconds.

Kibble ball dispensers

Frozen carrots cooked in veg stock

Hide Kibble in cardboard boxes

Put kibble under the little metal bowls for her to work out how to upturn

Frozen treats in a muffin tray with tennis balls in top

Snuffle mats and balls

So.much stuff I just keep passing to her to deflect from the scrabbling tugging and biting of me.

Everything is frozen to try and get a bit more longevity out of her attention

We lost our 5 year old golden last summer in quite upsetting circumstances after a short illness and I guess I am still processing that.

I didn't want the puppy stage ever again but I'd been desperate for a Golden for about 15 years and the timing was tight when we had our original one.

We decided to start again as we wanted the full golden experience.

But this is so hard. And Khaki looks just like her predecessor, the palest of Goldens. And I think that may be making it so much worse. A silly thing to do

Brain exercises.
Puzzles.
Training indoors.

Absolutely no engagement if she bites or mouths you.
puppies break off play with each other if mouthed too hard.

Cross your arms and disengage- you can try a Yelp as well the second her teeth make contact with you.

Brain work indoors tires them out.
Don’t be a pushover as other people won’t want a large dog jumping up at them .
Start leash training now in garden.

She's over stimulated. Needs a crate and a good twenty hours sleep over the day and night. Stop giving food to deflect as she's seeing that as rewards for behaviour you don't want.. Use a raggy toy. When she nips out use a flat hand and a sharp screek noise. Don't pull your hand away if she's biting, swap for the raggy toy. (Pulling away will possibly lead to tearing the skin)

Get in touch with the breeder for advice tailored to the breed

Also, why isn't she already properly vaccinated? All ours are fully vaccinated by ten weeks at the latest so they can be out and about as soon as possible.

Thank you. Yes I think a yelp might be good.

My older dog (mixed breed) barks at her when she's intolerable, I wondered whether to echo that as a human. So I'll try. Thanks

You dropped the lunch at four months in favour of snacks? Stop that. They're bounciest after food. Our eight month is loco after food for a time.

Puppy should be on three meals a day at this age
