Dog sick and signals!

Every now and then DDog gets really fussy- barks, bounces, looks at me intently- the same pallava as when he’s hungry and asking for extra. We offer food which he often eats, take him out, but he’s just generally fussy and excitable.

Then he vomits massively.

This usually catches me out- I’ve forgotten it’s one of the possibilities! It’s happened two days in a row- but it’s been months since last time.

What could I be doing to help, do you think? He’s never vomited outside, so I don’t feel taking him for a long walk would particularly help. Obviously I regret giving him extra food- but he does often ask and eat it with no issues.

The dog seems fine, it’s my carpet I’m mainly thinking about 😂

And obviously it will be many months before it happens again, and I’ll have forgotten the drill by then.

Is there some kind of doggy massage for indigestion?

I would say that if you're giving him enough food for his size then don't give him any more even if he asks. I also wouldn't give him any food if he is really bouncy and excited - that sort of over excitement can cause them to throw up IME. Make his food and if he's excited don't give it straight to him, go do something else and wait for him to be calm, then feed him. Then don't give him any more.

Don't feed him outside of his designated meal times.

Ah, ok. He’s a funny eater. Doesn’t want it until he does.

He has a routine where it’s offered, but doesn’t always want it then and has to be persuaded to eat. Then other days he’s starving, and eats as though he has hollow legs. And sometimes he’s uninterested and needs persuading but once he starts needs seconds.

He’s always been self limiting- he was prey model raw so ate as much as he wanted, whenever he wanted. The last few years he’s got fussier which we thought might be teeth, so put him on mush and needed to encourage him. He’s gone from being easy to feed to needing a bit more attention.

I would give him set meal times and give him 20 minutes to eat. If he doesn't eat, don't say anything, just take it away and don't give him anything else until his next meal.

Dogs won't starve themselves. If he's genuinely hungry he can wait until dinner and if he's not, then he doesn't need to eat just because he's asked.
